forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.03 out of 5 (696 reviews). Guests often mention enjoying the 7 private-hire baths with their handmade feel, and meals so generous they could not finish them, and delicious too. Some found the building old but clean. The thing to watch is the water temperature: some guests found it a little hot and cooled it with water before getting in, and others could not bathe because it was too hot.

Overview
Sujiyu Onsen Kokonoe Iyashi no Sato Hotel Daikogen is an 11-room ryokan in Sujiyu Onsen, in Kokonoe, Oita. It has 7 private-hire baths that guests can use free of charge as often as they like, plus separate communal baths for men and women. The water is a simple onsen flowing straight from the source, and the private-hire baths let your family soak on your own. There are plans with in-room dining for dinner, and young children are served a kids' meal. Co-sleeping for young children is limited to 1 child per 2 adults, and the ryokan does not accept requests to change dishes or accommodate allergies. Rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms, and the room type cannot be specified when booking.
Rooms
There are three room types: a 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami room, an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room and a Western-style twin. Of the 11 rooms, 10 are Japanese-style and 1 is Western-style. The Japanese-style rooms sleep 3 to 5 guests, while the Western-style twin sleeps 2, so families will mostly stay in the Japanese-style rooms. The 12-tatami rooms were renovated in fall 2021, including new Ryukyu tatami, and the 8-tatami rooms have an engawa (a wooden veranda). The room type cannot be specified when booking: depending on the plan you get an 8-tatami or 12-tatami Japanese-style room, and on the room-only plan either a Japanese-style room or the Western-style twin. The whole building is non-smoking, and every room has Wi-Fi, a washbasin and a toilet with a washlet. The room amenity list does not include a bath, so it is safest to plan on bathing in the private-hire baths and the communal baths. The 12-tatami and 8-tatami rooms come with an air purifier and disinfecting wipes, and a humidifier is provided in some rooms only.
Dining
Some plans serve dinner in your room (in-room dining), while others serve dinner in the restaurant; breakfast is always in the restaurant. Dinner is a creative kaiseki course made with mountain vegetables and seasonal ingredients, and depending on the plan it includes small seasonal dishes arranged on a half-moon tray, or a premium wagyu steak of A4 grade or higher grilled on a roof tile (kawarayaki). Young children are served a kids' meal, and their breakfast is a smaller portion. The ryokan does not accept requests to change dishes or accommodate allergies, so families with children who have food allergies should take note. The room-only plan includes no meals, and there are no convenience stores or restaurants around Sujiyu Onsen.
Baths and Onsen
On the grounds there are 7 free private-hire baths and separate communal baths for men and women. The water is a simple onsen, flowing straight from the source. The 7 private-hire baths are the riverside open-air baths Hotaru-yu and Momiji-yu, the semi-open-air baths Hinoki-buro (a Japanese cypress bath) and Waita no Yu, the indoor family bath Taru-buro (a barrel bath), and the cave baths Iwakagami and Yamaboshi. During your stay you can use them free of charge as many times as you like, so you can bathe with your children as a family on your own. The cave bath Yamaboshi has a cave that leads deeper inside and a lie-down bath, and it is popular with children. The private-hire baths are open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., and the communal baths from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The riverside open-air baths may close during storms or typhoons, and reaching Hotaru-yu means walking down stairs from the building to the stream. The source water is very hot and comes out of the spouts at a high temperature, so keep children away from the spouts. Bathing is also free after checkout, on the day of checkout only. A bathing tax of 150 yen for adults, and half that for children, is charged separately. Whether children in diapers may get into the baths is not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan in advance.
Family-Friendly Features
Child rates are set in three categories: meals only, futon only, and co-sleeping. Co-sleeping for young children (no meals or futon bedding) is limited to 1 child per 2 adults; beyond that, you need to choose the young-child category that includes a futon. Co-sleeping for more children than the number of adults is not accepted, even without meals. Co-sleeping is not free for young children either: on Rakuten Travel's rates, one young child with no meals or futon costs 2,750 yen per night (tax included; an example for a weekday in November 2026). The meals-only, futon-only and co-sleeping child rates do not include a children's yukata or towel set; these are available for a fee if needed. No information is published about cribs or other baby items available to borrow. Because the ryokan sits in the mountains, living alongside nature, you may come across insects and other bugs. Payment at the front desk is cash only. The last check-in is at 7 p.m., and you need to let the ryokan know if you will arrive after 6 p.m. The room-only plan accepts later arrivals: the plan name says until 9:30 p.m., while the plan description says until 9 p.m., so if you will be late, let the ryokan know your arrival time when you book.
Access
The ryokan is about 25 minutes by car from Kokonoe IC on the Oita Expressway. By rail, take a bus timed to the trains from Bungo-Nakamura Station on the JR Kyudai Main Line, about 40 minutes. Parking for 30 cars is free of charge, first-come, first-served. The ryokan bills itself as "the closest inn to the ski area," and Kuju Forest Park Ski Area is about 3 minutes away by car. There is no shuttle to the ski area. The ski area is open in winter only, and the 2025-2026 season ran until March 29, so if you are planning to ski or play in the snow, check that winter's operating period.
