forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.74 out of 5 (463 reviews). Guests mention that the private-hire family bath was stocked with children's chairs and toys, and families with babies say that dining in a private room let them nurse while they ate. Reviews also note that there were toys in the room, and that strollers could be brought inside once the wheels were wiped. One point to watch: there is no roof between the parking lot and the ryokan entrance, so you will need an umbrella on rainy days.

The ryokan's Welcome Baby information also lists baby chairs, bouncers, chairs with a meal tray (limited numbers), bath chairs and picture books. Baby beds are provided in the women's communal bath and the women's restroom. Diapers, baby wipes, baby drinks and vegetable bolo (melt-in-the-mouth baby biscuits) are sold at the shop.

Kids' meal and baby menu

Indoor

The kids' meal features dishes such as fried shrimp, karaage and gratin, along with chawanmushi and dessert. A Hamburg steak and chawanmushi set for younger children can be ordered separately (2,200 yen including tax). According to the Welcome Baby information, rice porridge and lightly seasoned udon are prepared for babies. Meals can be taken in private rooms in the dining area.

Private-hire bath

Indoor

A reservation-only private-hire bath with natural onsen water flowing straight from the source (heated), where the family can bathe without worrying about other guests. It costs 3,300 yen per session including tax and can be booked through a plan on the ryokan's website or at the front desk on the day. The "Supporting Moms with Babies: First Onsen Stay Plan with a 50-Minute Private-Hire Bath" includes 50 minutes in the bath from 4 p.m.

Neighboring park and river play

Outdoor

The park next door is managed by Nasushiobara City and has play equipment. Once summer vacation begins, the pool attached to the park opens. The ryokan lends balls and badminton sets. The river can be enjoyed from around July, and since there are shallow spots, children can play there under a parent's supervision.

Overview

Nasu Kuroiso Onsen Kansuien Kakuraku is a 22-room onsen ryokan on the riverside in Kuroiso, Nasushiobara. It is certified as a Welcome Baby inn by MIKI HOUSE Kosodate Soken, and its three certified room types come with a nap futon for babies. Meals can be taken in private rooms in the dining area, and there is a kids' meal as well as rice porridge and udon for babies. For bathing, there are separate communal baths for men and women fed by the ryokan's own spring, plus a private-hire bath that requires a reservation and carries a fee. Kansuitei is on the second floor, with no elevator, so access is by stairs only.

Rooms

There are 22 guest rooms in all. The standard rooms come in two types: 18 Japanese-style tatami rooms, and Japanese-Western rooms, which are twin tatami rooms with semi-double beds on the tatami. Sizes range from 8 to 14 tatami mats, so the rooms also work for two families traveling together or for three generations. Capacity is 2 to 3 guests for the Shofutei 10-tatami room, 2 to 5 for the Shofutei room of 13 tatami mats plus a 3-tatami broad window-side space, 1 to 6 for the Kansuitei 14-tatami room, and 1 to 5 for the Kansuitei Japanese-Western room. The Shofutei and Kansuitei rooms have their own bath and toilet. Kansuitei is on the second floor of a building with no elevator, so access is by stairs only, and strollers have to be carried up. Two room types, Myofu and Kissho, have an indoor onsen bath, and both are 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms with a broad window-side space. Myofu's bath is made of hinoki cypress and Towada stone, while Kissho's combines hinoki, teppei stone and plaster. The Welcome Baby certified rooms are the Myofu, Shofutei and Kansuitei types, all non-smoking, and all three come with a nap futon for babies. Humidifiers are available to borrow. A rollaway bed can be borrowed free of charge with an advance reservation.

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are served in private rooms in the dining area, including private rooms for families and groups. There is also a stay-in plan, "Cozy: Relax and Dine in Your Room", where dinner and breakfast are delivered to the door of your room, but it is limited to 2 guests, and similar plans on Ikyu.com do not accept children, so families with children eat in the dining area. The kids' meal features dishes such as fried shrimp, karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and gratin, along with chawanmushi (a savory steamed egg custard) and dessert. A Hamburg steak and chawanmushi set for younger children can also be ordered separately (2,200 yen including tax, reservation required). According to the Welcome Baby information, rice porridge and lightly seasoned udon are prepared for babies. Food allergies can be accommodated if you let the ryokan know when booking, but wheat, soy, bonito broth and kelp broth cannot be accommodated. Because allergens may get into dishes during cooking, the allergy accommodation is not complete, and guests with severe symptoms are asked to bring safe food of their own, such as retort-pouch or frozen meals.

Baths and Onsen

The ryokan draws Kuroiso Onsen from its own spring source. The spring water is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring, colorless, clear and odorless, with a neutral pH of 7. There are separate communal baths for men and women and an open-air bath built entirely of hinoki cypress, and you can bathe through the night from 3 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning (the baths are cleaned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day). The private-hire bath is reservation-only, with natural onsen water flowing straight from the source (heated), and costs 3,300 yen per session including tax. The women's communal bath and the women's restroom have baby beds. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may get into the communal bath tubs is not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan in advance.
