forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 4.25 out of 5 (1,571 reviews). Some guests say the communal bath, with its baby bath, chairs and baby bed, seems workable even with children under school age. The kids' plate is described as authentic in flavor and generous in portion, and children were delighted with it. Guests praise the milky-white onsen and its pleasant temperature, as well as the wide variety at breakfast. On the other hand, some caution that from the cottages the onsen in the main building is a little way off, and that the walk felt scary at night.

Hotel Laforet Nasu stands in Nasu Kogen next to the Nasu Imperial Villa and is made up of a hotel building and the Forest Cottages. Its communal bath is filled with soft, milky-white natural onsen water. The Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 tatami mats and the Japanese-Western rooms sleep up to 4, and the Loft Bed cottages sleep up to 6. Children wearing diapers cannot use the communal bath, and there is no private-hire bath and no playroom.
Rooms
The property is made up of a hotel building and the Forest Cottages. The Standard Room (Japanese-style) is a 42.7 sq m tatami room of 10 tatami mats for up to 4 guests, and it is recommended for families with small children. The Standard Room (Japanese-Western) combines a 6-tatami Japanese-style area with twin beds, at 42.7 sq m for up to 4 guests. In the Japanese-style rooms, the Japanese-Western rooms and the cottages, guests lay out their own futons. Western-style options include the Standard Room (Western-style), with twin beds plus an extra bed, 31.4 sq m for 2 to 3 guests, as well as Economy Rooms and Deluxe Rooms for up to 2 guests. The Western-style rooms have an en-suite bathroom. There are 8 Forest Cottages in all. The Standard type is about 75 sq m with a terrace and a living room, and sleeps up to 5. The Loft Bed type has 2 loft beds and 4 semi-double beds and sleeps up to 6; you take off your shoes and can go barefoot inside. Cooking is not possible in the cottages. The restaurant and the onsen communal bath are in the hotel building, a 2-3 minute walk outdoors from the cottages.
Dining
Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet, at 3,300 yen for adults. There is a children's menu for ages 4 through the sixth grade of elementary school, at 1,650 yen for breakfast and 3,850 yen for dinner (excluding Golden Week, the summer holidays and the year-end and New Year period). During Golden Week, the summer holidays, the year-end and New Year period and similar times, dinner may be buffet only. Children are welcome at all of the restaurants. For children's seating, the restaurants have two kinds: child chairs and baby cots. There is no baby food menu, but you may bring your own, and the front desk staff can warm it for you. Food allergens can be removed if you let the hotel know on its dedicated questionnaire at least 3 days in advance. There is no room service. The hotel asks guests not to wear yukata in the restaurants, so keep this in mind when dressing your children as well.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen communal baths use cloudy simple sulfur spring water (hydrogen sulfide type). They are on the 4th floor of the hotel building (communal bath, sauna and jetted bath) and the 5th floor (communal bath and rock bath). The men's and women's sides switch daily, and the baths are open from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to midnight. Mixed bathing is allowed only for children under school age, and the hotel also asks that children 120 cm or taller refrain from mixed bathing. Children must always bathe with a parent or guardian of the same sex. Children wearing diapers cannot use the communal baths, and since there is no private-hire bath or family bath, they will need to use the bath in your room (heated regular water, not onsen). The onsen communal baths have a baby bed and chairs for small children. Children with sensitive skin may develop irritation from the spring water, so the hotel advises them to shower only, or to rinse the spring water off in the shower when getting out. Guests with tattoos may bathe only if the tattoos can be covered with two cover seals (8 cm x 10 cm).
Family-Friendly Features
Children in grades 1 to 6 of elementary school pay a room charge. Children under school age stay with co-sleeping, but if they need their own bedding, a room charge applies to them as well. Junior high school students and older pay the adult rate. Some plans state that co-sleeping is free for children under school age, with breakfast charged separately for ages 4 and over. The number of co-sleeping children allowed varies by room and plan: up to 2 in the Standard and Loft Bed types of the Forest Cottages, and up to 1 on one of the breakfast-included plans for the Japanese-Western rooms. Cribs are available to rent for 1,210 yen each (tax included), and the hotel says they can be used only in the Western-style rooms of the hotel building. However, the room information for the Forest Cottages also lists a crib among its loan items, so if you would like one in a Japanese-style room, a Japanese-Western room or a cottage, it is best to check when booking. Bed guards and humidifiers are available to borrow free of charge. Loan items are limited in number, so request them when booking. There is no playroom, no stroller rental and no childcare facility, and babysitters cannot be arranged. Baby supplies such as formula, baby food and diapers are not sold on site. Extending until noon costs an additional 30% of the room charge, and extending until 3 p.m. an additional 50%. An accommodation tax applies to stays from October 1, 2026, and children under 12 are exempt.
