Kinugawa Onsen Asaya is a long-established ryokan in Kinugawa Onsen, founded 130 years ago. Alongside a buffet of 100 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes and communal baths and private-hire baths fed by its own spring source, it has the glass-walled playroom Warabe and an outdoor pool in summer. Children aged 0 stay free of charge, children aged 1 to 2 pay only the facility entry fee, and children from age 3 up to elementary school age pay 50% of the adult rate. Do note that co-sleeping with a child is not permitted in the Western-style rooms for safety reasons, so check this when choosing your room.
Rooms
The Japanese-Western rooms in the Shuhokan building - Miyabi, Precious, Superior and Relax - are about 52 sq m, each with 2 Simmons beds and a tatami area, sleeping 2 to 4 guests (for 3 or more guests, futon bedding is laid out on the tatami area). The Hachibankan building has rooms combining a 15-tatami Japanese-style tatami room with semi-double twin beds and a sitting room, which suit family stays well. The Shuhokan also has Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 and 12 tatami mats, well suited to groups and families (the 10-tatami rooms on the ravine side sleep 2 to 5 guests). The 20 sq m Western-style Small Twin rooms in the Shuhokan, by contrast, are compact, with two beds 100 cm wide, and sleep 1 to 2 guests; co-sleeping with a child is not permitted there for safety reasons.
Dining
Dinner is a buffet of about 100 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes, and breakfast a buffet of about 60 Japanese and Western dishes, with tempura fried to order and steak grilled on the spot among the favorites. Children's tableware and children's chairs are available at the buffet venue. The private dining restaurant Nikko also offers kaiseki plans, where you can enjoy precious time to yourselves without worrying about other guests.
Baths and Onsen
There are communal baths in both the Shuhokan and the Hachibankan, and children aged 7 and over use the bath for their own gender. Children up to age 6 may use the bath of the opposite gender. If you would like to bathe together as a family, the four private-hire baths themed on the uchide no kozuchi (magic mallet) are a convenient option (4,000 yen for 50 minutes, up to 5 people per bath, including children). Onsen water is piped to every room, so you can enjoy the onsen in your own guest-room bath as well.

Children's rates are 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children and 50% for children from age 3 up to elementary school age; children aged 1 to 2 pay a facility entry fee of 2,200 yen, and children aged 0 stay free of charge. Elementary school children and children aged 3 up to elementary school age are provided with meals and futon bedding. Inside the ryokan there is a glass-walled playroom, Warabe, where you can keep an eye on your children, and in summer staying guests can use the outdoor pool, which includes a children's pool, free of charge. The front desk also lends out children's items and pillows. The Family Plan comes with children's items to borrow such as bed-wetting sheets, a formula-preparation kettle and character pillows. Please note that children of elementary school age and under cannot use the ganbanyoku (heated-stone sauna) Rakuraku.
Access
It is about 8 minutes by Dial Bus from Kinugawa Onsen Station on the Tobu Line. By car, it is about 25 minutes from Imaichi IC on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road, heading toward Kinugawa. There is parking for 400 cars, free for staying guests. Guests with a small tattoo may use the communal bath if it is covered with a cover seal; the seals are sold at the gift shop.
