Hotels with Tattoo-Friendly Bath

Japan's onsen and communal baths often turn away guests with tattoos — for many traveling families, this is the single biggest worry about a hot-spring trip. When we checked the official materials of every hotel on this site, more than 200 properties explicitly state that tattooed guests cannot use the communal bath. That is exactly why it helps to know, in advance and with the exact conditions, which hotels do let you in.

Every hotel on this page has been verified through official materials as tattoo-friendly. They come in two types. Some have no restrictions at all — a growing number of hotels have published tattoo policies or lifted their bans around 2025. The majority, however, use a cover-seal system: you can bathe if your tattoo can be fully hidden with a special seal. The typical rule is a seal of about 8×10cm, up to two seals, sold at the front desk or hotel shop for around 200 yen each. Each hotel's exact seal size and where to get it is listed in the condition note on its page.

Two things to keep in mind: with cover-seal hotels, tattoos too large to hide are not allowed, so check the size condition before booking. And policies do change — it is worth confirming the latest rules on the official site before you travel. If the communal bath is off-limits, some hotels instead offer private family baths (kashikiri) that tattooed guests can reserve — a good alternative for families.
