forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.86 out of 5 (772 reviews). Guests are very satisfied with the breakfast and dinner buffets and the all-you-can-drink service, and some say the soft-serve ice cream was a big hit with their children. Other reviews mention that even on fully booked days, meal times were staggered and the communal bath was not crowded. On the other hand, the building is old, the older wing has no elevator, and the hotel sits at the top of a steep slope, so families with lots of luggage should take care.

Overview

Hakuba Hotel Pipe no Kemuri is a resort hotel just a 1-minute walk from the Shirakaba slope of Happo-one Ski Resort. Breakfast and dinner are both buffets in the restaurant. There is no dedicated children's menu and no baby food is provided, but you can serve your child from the buffet, and baby food you bring can be warmed in the microwave in the lobby. Co-sleeping is free for ages 0 to 2 and costs 1,100 yen (tax included) for ages 3 and over. Room options include a Japanese-Western room with 2 sets of futon bedding and connecting rooms for 5 to 6 guests, and guests can use the communal baths and open-air baths.

Rooms

The hotel has 77 rooms in total: twin rooms, triple rooms, Fours rooms (quad rooms), 4-person Japanese-Western rooms and single rooms. Every room has a bathtub, a toilet with a washing function, a TV, a refrigerator and a hair dryer, and Wi-Fi works in all rooms. Twin rooms have 2 single beds for 1 to 2 guests, triple rooms have 3 single beds for 2 to 3 guests, and Fours rooms have 4 single beds for 2 to 4 guests. The Japanese-Western room has 2 single beds and 2 sets of futon bedding and sleeps 2 to 4 guests; you lay out the futons yourself. Because you can sleep on futons, the hotel presents it as a room for families with small children. For groups of 5 to 6, there are connecting rooms (36 sq m): two adjoining triple rooms with a door between them. The single rooms and some of the twin rooms in Building 1 have no elevator and can be reached by stairs only, so if you are bringing a stroller, please check your room's location when booking.

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are both served buffet-style in the restaurant. Dinner is a buffet of more than 20 Japanese and Western dishes that starts at 6 p.m. and ends between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., depending on the season. Breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. On plans that include dinner, you need to check in by 6 p.m. There is no dedicated children's menu, but you can pick out dishes from the buffet to suit your child's tastes. Soft-serve ice cream is all-you-can-eat at both dinner and breakfast. Baby food is not provided, so please bring store-bought baby food and warm it in the microwave on site. The restaurant has children's chairs, but some have no safety belt and numbers are limited; if your child cannot yet sit steadily, the hotel suggests bringing a stroller or similar. There is no allergy-specific menu. Each dish is labeled with allergens based on information from the manufacturers, but because everything is prepared in the same kitchen, the menu is not fully allergy-friendly. Guests with severe symptoms may be declined for the stay or for meals, so please consult the hotel before booking.

Baths

The hotel has communal baths (one each for men and women) and open-air baths (one each for men and women), open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Since every room has a bathtub, you can also bathe small children in your room. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may get into the communal bath tubs is not stated, so please check in advance. The hotel's policy is that guests with tattoos may use the communal baths as long as they have no ties to antisocial forces and are considerate of other guests, but there is also information asking such guests to refrain from bathing, so please check with the front desk in advance.

Family-Friendly Features

Co-sleeping is free for ages 0 to 2 and costs 1,100 yen (tax included) for ages 3 and over. Children's rates with bedding and meals are 50% of the adult room rate for children aged 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school, 70% for elementary school children, and 100% for junior high school students and older, and they may differ by plan. The number of children who can co-sleep per bed and bedding for babies and toddlers are not specified, so please check before booking if you need them. Children's slippers are provided. Adult yukata are available, but there are no children's yukata, so the hotel suggests bringing your own. No tanzen (a padded robe worn over the yukata) is provided, and in winter the hotel suggests bringing warm clothing. The hotel does not boil-sterilize baby bottles, but guests are welcome to use the microwave in the lobby, so you can sterilize bottles there if you bring a microwave sterilizing case. Humidifiers are available to borrow at the front desk, in limited numbers. Late checkout is available for an extra 1,000 yen per room per hour (before tax), depending on bookings that day; please request it when you book.

Access

Check-in is from 3 p.m. (last check-in 9:30 p.m.), and checkout is at 10 a.m. The hotel is 10 minutes by taxi from JR Hakuba Station, or by car 60 minutes from Azumino IC on the Nagano Expressway and 60 minutes from Nagano IC on the Joshin-etsu Expressway. Parking for 70 vehicles is free; buses and large vehicles cannot park. There is a steep slope just before the hotel that becomes hard to climb in snow, so if you come by car in winter, studless winter tires and tire chains are required. The Shirakaba slope of Hakuba Happo-one Ski Resort is a 1-minute walk away, and the Adam gondola station is a 5-minute walk up a slope. Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field is 10 minutes by car, and there is no shuttle to the nearby ski areas.
