forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.47 out of 5 (435 reviews). Many guests say breakfast and dinner are delicious, and the pork shabu-shabu and buffet are popular. Adults and children alike enjoy the ice cream and drinks after check-in. One review says that even with a 1-year-old, the staff and other guests watched over the family warmly. Guests also praise the mountain views from the rooms and the starry skies. On the other hand, some point out that with no elevator, climbing from the basement-level bath to a 3rd-floor room was hard work.

Overview

Hotel Hakuba Berghaus is a hotel in Tsugaike Kogen in Otari-mura, Nagano, with Tsugaike Mountain Resort right in front of it. Rooms that work for families are the Japanese-Western rooms for 2 to 4 guests and a large Japanese-style tatami room of 12.5 tatami mats. The private-hire bath, built entirely of hinoki cypress, is free and needs no reservation. Stays are all-inclusive, with meals and lounge drinks included in the room rate. Co-sleeping children aged 0 to 1 are booked in a category with no meals or futon bedding. There is no elevator, so guest rooms are reached by stairs.

Rooms

Guest rooms are spread over three floors: the Hana floor on the 2nd floor, the Take floor on the 3rd and the Sora floor on the 4th. The Hana floor has Japanese-Western rooms with bath and toilet (2 guests; twin beds plus a living room; 28-30 sq m) and large Japanese-style tatami rooms with bath and toilet (2 to 4 guests; 12.5 tatami mats; 33-35 sq m). The Take floor has 6 Japanese-Western rooms with a toilet (2 to 4 guests; twin beds plus a tatami room; 30-35 sq m) and 2 Western-style rooms with a toilet (2 guests; twin room; 17.5 sq m). The Sora floor has 3 Japanese-Western rooms with bath and toilet (2 to 4 guests; twin beds plus a tatami room; 30-35 sq m). The Japanese-Western rooms on the Take floor sleep up to 4, and for 2 or more guests, futon bedding is laid on the tatami for sleeping. Staff do not lay out the futons for you. The room list on the hotel's website says every room has low twin beds (5 rooms with singles and 13 with semi-doubles), with the semi-doubles (120 cm wide) in the Take floor Japanese-Western rooms and the Hana floor large tatami room. However, the hotel notes that the beds in the 12.5-tatami large Japanese-style room have some height, and photos show them as beds with legs. If you would like low beds, choose a Japanese-Western room on the Take floor or check before booking. The Take floor rooms have a toilet but no bath, so children bathe in the communal bath or the private-hire bath. Rooms have an air purifier and a humidifier, and all rooms are non-smoking.

Dining

Meals are served in the restaurant; in-room dining is not available. In the summer season (April to November), you can choose dinner from two options: all-you-can-eat pork shabu-shabu (thinly sliced pork swished in hot broth) with a buffet, or a full barbecue. The barbecue dinner is held in an outdoor tent and is limited to 5 groups per day. In winter, dinner is pork shabu-shabu with a buffet of various dishes, and breakfast is also a buffet. The buffets offer a wide-ranging menu that adults and children alike can enjoy. Plans are all-inclusive, with meals and drinks included in the room rate. Soft drinks and ice cream in the lounge are available at no additional charge from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Drinks from the vending machines and lift tickets are charged separately. From December 19 to April 3 (except December 30), there is no dinner on Wednesdays and no breakfast on Thursdays, and all stays on those days are room-only. Even on plans with dinner, dinner is not served if you check in at 7 p.m. or later, so keep an eye on your arrival time. Allergy accommodation and children's chairs are not listed in our information, so if you need them, please confirm with the hotel before booking.

Baths

There are three baths: the men's bath, the women's bath and the private-hire bath, and the communal baths are on basement level 1. The men's side has a communal bath with a sauna and an open-air bath built entirely of hinoki cypress. The women's side has a rock open-air bath and a communal bath with a shampoo bar. The private-hire bath, built entirely of hinoki cypress, is free and needs no reservation; if the sign on the door shows it is vacant, your family can use it on your own. Bathing hours are 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. The onsen was discontinued on August 24, 2016, and the baths today are not onsen. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers (not yet toilet-trained) can get into the communal bath tubs is not listed in our information, so please confirm with the hotel before booking.

Family-Friendly Features

For co-sleeping children aged 0 to 1, select "Child aged 0-1, no meals or futon bedding" when booking. Rates vary by season and plan. Plans with child rates are for the rooms that sleep 4: the Japanese-Western rooms on the Take and Sora floors and the large Japanese-style tatami room on the Hana floor. No child rates are shown for the twin rooms that sleep 2. Rakuten Travel lists a plan with breakfast and dinner buffets for stays from March 1 to April 3, 2027, advertised as free for up to 2 children in sixth grade or below (availability may change). Whether cribs or baby futons are available is not listed in our information, so if you need them, please confirm with the hotel before booking. Roomwear is provided for adults only, with none for children, so please bring your own. There is no elevator: the guest rooms (floors 2 to 4) are reached by stairs, and the front desk and restaurant are on the 1st floor. Strollers and luggage have to be carried by hand. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout is at 10 a.m., and late checkout is not available.

Access

Tsugaike Mountain Resort is right in front of the hotel, with the slopes right outside the door. The gondola lift station for Tsugaike Nature Park is a 5-minute walk away, while the way back from the gondola station to the hotel is uphill and takes 10 to 15 minutes. Ski and snowboard rentals are not available in the hotel, so arrange them at a nearby rental shop. Ski and snowboard storage and boot lockers are free. The free hotel-only parking has 20 spaces, and in winter studless winter tires and tire chains are required. The nearest bus stop, Tsugaike Kogen, is a 10 to 15-minute walk from the hotel. A shuttle between the bus stop and the hotel runs in winter only (December 20 to the end of March) and requires a reservation: pickups meet only the last bus arriving at the stop, and drop-offs are timed only to the first bus of the day. At other times and in summer, please use a taxi. The hotel's website has an English version.
