The setting and the appeal of Lake Kawaguchi's northern shore

Pension Candle is a 7-room Nordic-style pension at 1548 Oishi, Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi, in the Oishi Petit Pension Village on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi. Five minutes away on foot is Oishi Park, where flowers bloom through the seasons; the lavender fields in summer are especially popular as one of the signature photo spots around the lake. The spectacular setting looks across Lake Kawaguchi to Mount Fuji, and it works well as a base for leisure and sports.

View communal bath

One of the pension's highlights is the view communal bath completed on June 29, 2019, built so that you can soak while looking out at Mount Fuji. For a time, hours for the communal bath were limited as a measure against COVID-19, and guests are advised that in winter there may be days when it cannot be used because of freezing. The water is heated rather than onsen water.

Rooms

There are four room types, several of them well suited to a family stay.

• Western-style Big Room: a spacious, playfully designed Western-style room with the bath outside the room, and a toilet and washbasin provided
• Japanese-style tatami Big Room: a Japanese-style tatami room with an en-suite bathroom, where the futon bedding is already laid out when you check in. This is the type families with children like best
• Fours room: a room for 4 guests with 2 semi-double beds, 1 single bed and 1 sofa bed
• Twin room: a simple room for 2 guests with 2 beds

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room, and in-room dining can be discussed for guests in the Japanese-style tatami rooms. The home-style cooking you would hope for from a pension is well regarded.

Access and parking

From Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyuko Line, take the bus bound for Oishi Petit Pension Village and get off at the Shinnyoen stop, about 30 seconds' walk from the pension. Alternatively, take the Lake Kawaguchi Retro Sightseeing Bus and get off at Shizen Seikatsukan, about a 5-minute walk away. By car, it is about 20 minutes from the Kawaguchiko Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. Free parking is available for 10 cars, with no reservation needed.

What to know when staying with children

Though it is a small pension, many families with children stay here, most often in the Japanese-style tatami Big Room with its en-suite bathroom. Credit cards are not accepted and payment is in cash, so please come prepared. The tub in the communal bath has a handrail. Guest rooms have Western-style toilets. The pension can be used by guests in wheelchairs, and there is a barrier-free toilet inside that wheelchair users can use. Meals for older guests and meals prepared with allergies in mind can also be arranged.
