Iwaki Yumoto Onsen Ujo no Yado Shintsuta is a long-established ryokan in Iwaki Yumoto Onsen, founded in 1877, the 10th year of the Meiji era. Associated with the poet Ujo Noguchi, it offers a mixed-gender garden open-air bath surrounded by bamboo groves and creative cuisine whose menu changes with the season and the ingredients available. Children from age 0 to 4 can stay with co-sleeping, and child rates are set at 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children and 50% for children below elementary school age. In the Japanese-Western room, futons can be laid out so the family can rest together.
Rooms
There are 51 rooms in total: 20 Western-style rooms, 26 Japanese-style tatami rooms, 1 Japanese-Western room and 4 special rooms. The special rooms in the Fukujukan wing, on the upper floors, are Japanese-style tatami rooms of either 12.5 tatami mats plus 6 tatami mats and a powder room, or 15 tatami mats plus 6 tatami mats and a powder room; each has its own open-air bath and sleeps 2 to 6 guests. That open-air bath is not fed by the hot spring; it uses heated water. The Japanese-Western room Wa-Modern, renovated in June 2024, pairs a 12.5-tatami Japanese-style room with a 6-tatami bedroom, where the bed is king size. Four futons can be laid out in the Japanese-style room, so families of 4 or 5 can stay as well. The standard rooms in the Fukujukan wing are Japanese-style tatami rooms of 12.5 tatami mats plus 6 tatami mats with a bathroom and toilet, sleeping 2 to 6 guests. The Western-style twin rooms have 2 beds measuring 120 cm wide by 197 cm long and suit 1 to 2 guests. The reasonably priced "Wake-Ari" rooms in the main building are Japanese-style tatami rooms of 8 to 14 tatami mats with a bathroom and toilet, sleeping 2 to 5 guests, though the routes to the front desk, the baths and the dining area have steps along the way. Guest rooms, the lobby and the rest of the building are all non-smoking.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served in the banquet hall; in-room dining is not offered. Dinner starts at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., and breakfast begins between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Food allergies are accommodated as far as possible if you let the ryokan know in advance, but requests based on likes and dislikes cannot be accommodated. Changing to a different dish carries a separate charge.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen is a sulfur spring, a type that is rare across Japan. The garden open-air bath Chikurin is mixed-gender, and guests wear bathing wear, while the communal baths are separated by gender. A private-hire family bath was added in 2017; it costs 2,000 yen for 45 minutes and is reserved at check-in. This private-hire bath uses 100% water from the source, so families and couples can enjoy the onsen privately. The special rooms' own open-air baths, on the other hand, are not fed by the hot spring; they use heated water.
Family-Friendly Features
Children from age 0 to 4 can stay with co-sleeping.
