Rooms
Shintaki is a long, narrow ryokan facing the Yugawa River in the center of Higashiyama Onsen, and all 92 rooms are non-smoking. There are 9 special rooms with an onsen bath, and two of these types are presented as suited to families and groups: the semi-suite with a spacious terrace and an open-air bath fed from the spring source (newly built in 2026, on the mountain side), and the twin room with a Japanese-style living room and an indoor bath fed from the spring source (renovated in 2024, on the riverside). The former sleeps up to 3 guests in twin beds and a sofa bed, or up to 4 when a co-sleeping child is included, and its spacious terrace is built as one with the open-air bath. The latter sleeps up to 4 guests; its indoor bath fed from the spring source is large enough for 2 adults to bathe together, and for parties of more than 2 guests, futons are laid out in the Japanese-style living room before check-in. The rooms with a semi-open-air bath (rooms 01, 02, 03, 11, 12 and 13), by contrast, are for adults only and cannot be used by children aged 12 and under, so families who want a room with an open-air bath need to choose one of the two family types above.

The baths here are free-flowing onsen with no added water, no reheating, no recirculation and no filtration, and guests can enjoy 4 kinds: Watariyu, built of hinoki cypress; Saru no Yu, associated with Hijikata Toshizo; and Sennen no Yu, made up of an open-air bath and a rock bath along the mountain stream. Sennen no Yu is in a basement reached by going down about 27 steep steps, and it has no showers, bathing taps, shampoo or conditioner, so Watariyu and Saru no Yu are easier to use with small children. At night, Sennen no Yu can be reserved as a private-hire bath for staying guests only: 1,500 yen for 50 minutes for the rock bath, and 1,500 yen for 25 minutes for the marble bath and the open-air bath.

Dinner is served as a kaiseki course, brought out at each guest's own pace following a menu that changes with the season. The dinner venue cannot be chosen, but children of elementary school age and under are served a kids' meal at dinner, and the restaurant has children's chairs and a baby bed. If you would like to eat in your room or in a private room, you need to book a dedicated in-room dining plan, or inquire separately about a private room.
