Overview
Aizu Higashiyama Onsen Oyado Tohou is a 160-room onsen ryokan on high ground in Aizu Higashiyama Onsen, made up of the Tower Building, Suzakutei and the Main Building. Its highlights are two open-air view baths overlooking the Aizu castle town, plus dinner and breakfast buffets centered on regional cuisine. Children's rates are set in three tiers: 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children, 50% for children who have not yet started elementary school, and 3,300 yen for ages 2 and under. Plans also let families choose whether infants have meals and bedding. There is no private-hire bath, so bathing centers on the communal baths.
Rooms
The ryokan is made up of three buildings - the Tower Building, Suzakutei and the Main Building - with 160 rooms in total, all non-smoking. Room types are varied: Japanese-style tatami rooms from 8 to 32 tatami mats, Western-style rooms from 17 to 44 sq m, and Japanese-Western rooms of 14.5 tatami mats. The large tatami rooms (32 mats) sleep up to 16 guests. Some rooms may be assigned during busy periods without a bath but with a toilet, and the large tatami rooms and the special Japanese-style tatami rooms in the Main Building (16 and 32 mats) have no bath in the room, so guests use the communal baths. Every room has an air purifier with a humidifying function. Children's rates are 70% of the adult rate for elementary school children (ages 7 to 12) and 50% for children who have not yet started elementary school (ages 3 to 6); for ages 2 and under, a facility fee of 3,300 yen including tax applies. On plans listed on Ikyu.com, infants booked with meals and bedding pay 50% of the adult rate and infants booked with no meals and no bedding pay 3,300 yen, while the combinations of no meals with bedding, and meals without bedding, are not accepted. The number of children who may co-sleep varies by plan, either up to 3 or up to 5.
Dining
Both dinner and breakfast are served at the buffet restaurant Agaransho. The dinner buffet runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with last orders at 8:30 p.m., and features Aizu regional dishes along with freshly made dishes at the live-cooking stations. The breakfast buffet offers both Japanese and Western dishes, and Kitakata ramen at breakfast - known locally as asa-ra, or "morning ramen" - is another specialty. The private dining restaurant Kissho has 9 rooms seating 2 to 14 guests, with a choice of tatami-floored private rooms or private rooms with chairs and tables. Regarding food allergies, the ryokan does not prepare dedicated menus or provide allergen information, but guests may bring their own safe food and tableware; this must be mentioned when booking. Baby food is not available either, so please bring your own if you need it.
Baths and Onsen
The open-air view baths Sora no Yu and Tanagumo no Yu use sulfate spring water. Bathing hours are 1:30 p.m. to midnight and 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; the baths are closed for cleaning from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the men's and women's baths swap between morning and evening. The water is both free-flowing and recirculated, and it is heated and diluted with water to adjust the temperature. There is no private-hire bath, so families bathe mainly in the communal baths. When large groups are staying, a communal bath may be reserved exclusively for them for a set period.
Family-Friendly Features
Children are welcome to stay. Inside the ryokan there is a game corner that both children and adults can enjoy, with crane games and more (3 p.m. to 9 p.m.), and a table tennis corner (4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., 500 yen per table for 30 minutes). For limited periods, the ryokan runs "Kodomo Onsen Meguri no Tabi," a joint program with three ryokan in Hakodate, Aizu and Kurobe Unazuki. It is a hands-on program in which children learn through play, encountering local culture, food and history through quiz-style learning sheets and food experiences.
Access
The ryokan is about 20 minutes by car from the Aizu-Wakamatsu Interchange and about 10 minutes by car from Tsurugajo Castle. Free parking for staying guests has space for 100 cars and 20 large buses. From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, a taxi takes about 15 minutes and costs around 2,000 yen. Alternatively, take the Haikara-san or Akabe town loop bus, get off at the Aizu Buke Yashiki-mae bus stop and phone the ryokan for a free pickup, which usually arrives in about 5 minutes. A free shuttle bus also runs twice a day, by reservation only.
