Overview
Aizu Ashinomaki Onsen Okawaso is a large ryokan standing beside the gorge at Aizu Ashinomaki Onsen. Its signature features are Shiki Butai Tanada, an open-air bath whose tubs are arranged like terraced rice paddies, and private-hire baths available for 45 minutes at 3,300 yen. Japanese-style tatami rooms such as those in Tsukimitei (non-smoking) measure 10 tatami mats or more and are roomy enough for a family trip. At the same time, some room types, including the Comfort Twin Room, are adult-only, and others accept children only from junior high school age, so checking the room type when booking is essential.
Rooms
The non-smoking Tsukimitei rooms are Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 or 12 tatami mats for 2 to 5 guests, and are the standard tatami room here. Their spacious layout of 10 tatami mats or more makes them a good choice for family trips and groups. The Yoimachitei Standard is a non-smoking tatami room of 12 to 14.5 tatami mats for 1 to 6 guests, with sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating. The Yoimachitei Special Room is a non-smoking pair of connected tatami rooms of 12.5 and 8 tatami mats for 2 to 8 guests. The VIP suite, a top-floor corner Japanese-style room, has a 12.5-tatami main room, a 6-tatami anteroom and a 10-tatami Western-style room, for 2 to 8 guests. On the other hand, the Comfort Twin Room, the modern-style Western twin room, the VIP suite Western-style room, the VIP guest rooms, the VIP Twin and the Yoimachitei Aizu Momen no Ma are all adult-only rooms. In addition, Tsukimitei New Standard and Tsukimitei Japanese-Modern accept children only from junior high school age, so children of elementary school age and younger, including babies and preschool-age children, cannot stay in them. Dining
Dinner is normally a Japanese kaiseki meal in the restaurant hall, served in two seatings beginning at 5:45 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. For the main course you can choose between beef or seafood grilled on a ceramic plate; if no preference is given, the meat dish is served. Breakfast is a buffet featuring Aizu-grown Koshihikari rice, rice topped with a raw Aizu jidori chicken egg, and Bekonyu milk and yogurt. Depending on circumstances, it may be served as a set Japanese meal instead. Some plans serve dinner in a private dining room. The bed-and-breakfast plan does not include dinner, and there is nowhere to eat on the property other than on dinner-inclusive plans. As there are no restaurants in the surrounding area, guests are advised to eat before arriving. There are a Seven-Eleven and Gyunyuya Shokudo nearby, about 10 minutes away by car. Children's meal rates are divided in detail by age and by whether meals and bedding are included: elementary school children in both the upper and lower grades pay 70% of the adult rate, while babies and preschool-age children with meals and bedding pay 50% of the adult rate.
Baths and Onsen
The ryokan's pride is the open-air bath Shiki Butai Tanada, which has 3 tubs each on the men's and women's sides. Onsen water is fed into each tub separately, and although water is added in some seasons, it flows directly from the source. It is open from 5:30 a.m. to midnight and is unavailable from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. for cleaning. There are 2 communal indoor baths. There are also 2 private-hire baths, available between 1 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. for 45 minutes at 3,300 yen including tax, so a family can bathe on its own. They have no washing taps and are for soaking only. The sky open-air bath can also be booked for private use, but reaching it involves 123 steps, there are no shower facilities, and guests are asked to refrain from using shampoo, conditioner, soap and the like. Day-use bathing is also available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with last admission at 2 p.m., at 1,800 yen for adults and 900 yen for children ages 3 to 12.
Family-friendly features
Children are welcome to stay. Babies from age 0 to under 3 who do not need meals or bedding stay free, while preschool-age children are charged from age 3. Children age 2 and under who co-sleep and do not need meals also stay free. Junior high school students and older pay the adult rate, and when one adult books with one or more children in a room, one of the children is charged at the adult rate. For barrier-free access, the ryokan is wheelchair accessible and offers wheelchairs to borrow and a barrier-free toilet. The room described as a barrier-free room is the modern-style Western twin room, but it is an adult-only room, so children cannot stay there. Conditions for children vary by room, so please check when booking.
Access
The ryokan is about 40 minutes by car from Aizu-Wakamatsu IC, and a shuttle from Ashinomaki-Onsen Station is available with a reservation. Shuttle service runs from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ouchi-juku is about 20 minutes away, Tsuruga Castle about 25 minutes and Mount Iimori about 30 minutes. Parking for 100 cars is available free of charge.
