Overview
Urabandai Lake Resort Honkan Goshiki no Mori is a highland resort hotel in Urabandai, Fukushima, a 3-minute walk from Goshiki-numa and overlooking Lake Hibara. The hotel is known for its open-air bath Hibarami no Yu, where the onsen flows directly from the source, and for water with a pH of 6.2 that is gentle on the skin. The buffet restaurant has a kids' corner just for children. Rooms
Guest rooms range from Western-style rooms to Japanese-style tatami rooms. The Standard Twin is 36 sq m for 1-2 guests, with two beds 103 cm wide, and the Superior Twin is 41 sq m for 1-3 guests, with two beds 123 cm wide (an extra bed is used for a third guest). The 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami room is laid out for families and sleeps 1-5 guests, while the Double is 34 sq m for 1-2 guests, with a queen-size bed 160 cm wide. The top-floor Deluxe Twin is 58 sq m for 1-4 guests, with two beds 140 cm wide, and the Corner Suite, which has a living room, a bedroom and a Japanese-style tatami room, is 102 sq m for 1-5 guests. All rooms are non-smoking, and the bath and toilet are separate in every room.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are served at the buffet restaurant Hibara Dining. Dinner features more than 50 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes, an all-you-can-eat spread generous enough to satisfy children as well as adults. The same restaurant has a kids' corner, where food, sweets and dagashi (traditional penny sweets) popular with children are set out on a table low enough for them to reach themselves, and children's chairs are provided. The buffet menu labels egg, wheat, milk, buckwheat, peanut, shrimp, crab and walnut, but note that the same kitchen and dishwashers are used, so allergens are not completely removed. The Japanese restaurant Waraku is closed for the time being, and meals are generally served in the restaurants, so in-room dining is not available.
Baths and Onsen
The open-air bath Hibarami no Yu flows directly from the source, and its view across Lake Hibara is a favorite with guests. The water is a neutral onsen with a pH of 6.2, gentle on the skin and considered well suited to a baby's first onsen. The communal bath Aurora no Yu is open from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., and its small tub is fed directly from the source. There are also private-hire baths (2 of them, open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.) using heated onsen water, an option when you want to bathe with your children without worrying about other guests. The baths in the guest rooms are not onsen.
Family-friendly features
Children from age 0 through those who have not yet started elementary school can stay by co-sleeping, and co-sleeping is free for children ages 3 and under (no amenities included). Up to 2 children may co-sleep. If a co-sleeping child aged 4 or older who is not yet in elementary school adds meals, dinner costs 2,100 yen and breakfast 900 yen extra. Depending on the plan, elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate, while rates for infants and toddlers vary according to whether meals and bedding are included; with neither, there is no charge. A crib is available to rent for a fee, and children's yukata (large, medium and small), toothbrushes and slippers are provided. Hot water for formula can be prepared if you ask at the front desk. In summer, from July 18 to August 31, children up to elementary school age staying at the hotel receive fireworks free of charge. The play spot on the third floor, by contrast, is billed by the hotel as an adult-oriented amusement zone. Moving around the building by wheelchair is possible, but there are no fully barrier-free rooms, and assistance inside the room may be needed.
Access
The hotel is a 3-minute walk from the sightseeing spot Goshiki-numa. By car it is about 25 minutes from Inawashiro-Bandai-Kogen IC on the Ban-etsu Expressway, and by train you can use the free shuttle bus from JR Inawashiro Station to the hotel (no reservation required; groups of 10 or more must reserve). Parking is free for staying guests, with 350 spaces available.
