Akiu Grand Hotel is a large onsen hotel with 140 rooms overlooking Rairaikyo, the gorge at Akiu Onsen. It serves a buffet of about 50 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes as well as kaiseki set meals in private dining rooms, and the main building and annex together have 4 communal baths and 4 open-air baths. Children's rates are set by age, at 70% for elementary school children and 50% for children ages 3 and over but under elementary school age. Co-sleeping is available for children aged 0, and families may bring in retort-pouch baby food and formula. In summer, kids' events such as a ninja house are held.
Rooms
This large onsen hotel looks down over Rairaikyo, the gorge at Akiu Onsen, and has 140 rooms in total: Japanese-style tatami rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, Western-style rooms, VIP suites and Royal Suites. The renovated rooms on the third and fourth floors of the main building all have beds, so there is no need to lay out and put away futons. Rooms range in size from Japanese-Western rooms of around 10 tatami mats up to special Japanese-Western rooms in the 60.2 sq m and 50 sq m classes, with capacities from 2 to 6 guests. Please note that the 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms are normally booked for 2 or more adults; even when one adult and one child stay, the bill is settled on the day at the rate for 2 adults.
Dining
Both dinner and breakfast are served at the dining hall Hidamari as a buffet of about 50 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes. Dinner is served from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. If you choose a set-meal plan, dinner is served in the banquet dining room, and you can request a start time between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Breakfast is not offered as a set meal, so it is served at the buffet venue. For children, the menu can be either a Japanese set meal with fewer courses than the adult kaiseki, or a Western-style kids' meal. Private banquet dining rooms suited to families and small groups are also available.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water is a weakly alkaline saline, sodium-calcium chloride spring, said to be beneficial for joint pain, frozen shoulder and neuralgia. The main building and annex together have 4 communal baths and 4 open-air baths, and the open-air bath in the main building is an infinity bath that feels at one with Rairaikyo. The communal baths are open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next morning in the main building, and from 5 a.m. to midnight in the annex. Saunas adjoin both the men's and women's communal baths in the annex, but they open from 2 p.m. onward. There are no private-hire open-air baths. For families with children, yukata are available in three sizes of about 130 cm, 120 cm and 110 cm.

Access
JR Sendai Station is about 50 minutes away by public bus and about 30 minutes by car, and the Sendai-minami IC on the Tohoku Expressway is about 10 minutes away by car. A free shuttle bus runs daily from the East Exit of Sendai Station, with advance reservation required. The parking area holds 150 vehicles, is accessible 24 hours a day, and requires no reservation.
