Akiu Resort Hotel Crescent is a resort hotel set in Akiu Onsen in Taihaku-ku, Sendai. Its pride is a communal bath of natural onsen water drawn from the hotel's own source 800 m underground, along with a French restaurant, and the adjoining Akiu Forest Sports Park, a sister facility, offers playground equipment and horseback riding. In summer there is an outdoor pool as well; the children's pool is built shallow, about knee-deep for an adult, so families with small children can enjoy it with peace of mind. Cribs and kids' meals are among the touches for families staying with children.
Rooms
Guest rooms come as Western-style twins (26-30 sq m, for 1 to 3 guests) and Japanese-style tatami rooms of 7.5, 10 and 12 tatami mats. The Western-style rooms have two beds measuring 112 cm wide by 203 cm long, and for three guests either an extra bed is arranged or a triple room is assigned first. The 7.5-tatami Japanese-style rooms along the ravine are just right for a couple, or for two adults with one or two small children, but keep in mind that three or more adults may find them a little tight. For families of four or five, 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms are available. There are also connecting rooms that let you move between adjoining rooms without stepping into the corridor (in some rooms only, reservation required), popular with families and with groups of friends. All rooms are non-smoking and come with an air purifier that has a humidifying function.
Dining
Breakfast is a Japanese-and-Western buffet of about 35 dishes, with a menu that draws on specialties from Miyagi and Sendai, including rice and miso from Akiu. For dinner you can choose between the French restaurant Bellevue and the Japanese restaurant Yawaragi, which is by reservation only. Children's meals differ by age: children in the upper grades of elementary school are served much the same as adults, while children in the lower grades of elementary school, children who have not yet started elementary school, and co-sleeping children on a plan that includes meals are served a kids' meal.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath Shunju no Yu uses natural onsen water from the hotel's own source, welling up from 800 m underground. The spring water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring (a hypotonic, weakly alkaline, high-temperature spring). It is said to be beneficial for neuralgia, skin conditions and recovery from fatigue, and the bath also has a popular jacuzzi. Hours are from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next morning, with last morning admission at 8:30 a.m. for cleaning. There is no private-hire bath, so families bathe in the communal bath as well. The bathing tax, charged separately from the room rate, applies to adults only and is not charged for children.

Access
The hotel is about 50 minutes by public bus from JR Sendai Station and about 15 minutes from the Sendai-minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. A free shuttle bus from Sendai Station is also available, with departures including 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.; it must be reserved by the day before, so families without a car can still arrange transportation. There is free parking for 90 cars on the grounds.
