Rather than glamour, what stands out is warm, unobtrusive hospitality. Guests can take their time in Akiu's celebrated hot spring water in the communal baths, and the small scale of the ryokan makes it a calm place for families to stay.

Akiu Onsen Soraichi is a small 16-room ryokan in Akiu Onsen, where you can soak in onsen water that has flowed straight from the source for more than 130 years, book the hinoki barrel bath for your group alone, and choose between in-room dining and the dining hall for your kaiseki meals. Children's rates vary by age and by whether meals and bedding are included. There is no age limit for babies and toddlers in the communal baths, and a baby bath is available. Do note that cribs and strollers are not available to borrow, and there is no playroom.
Rooms
All 16 rooms comprise 14 Japanese-style tatami rooms (12 rooms of 8 tatami mats and 2 rooms of 10 tatami mats) and 2 Japanese-Western rooms. The 8-tatami rooms suit solo travelers and couples, while the roomier 10-tatami rooms are also recommended for families and groups of friends. The Japanese-Western rooms pair a 9-tatami area with a bedroom holding one double bed, so they work well for guests who would rather not sleep on tatami. Bedding is futon with down duvets as standard, and every room has a bath, a bidet-style toilet, and heating and air conditioning.
Dining
For both dinner and breakfast you can choose between in-room dining and the dining hall. With in-room dining, a nakai attendant brings each course to your room, so you can talk and enjoy a drink over your meal without worrying about other guests. Dinner centers on kaiseki courses such as an all-seafood kaiseki or an all-meat kaiseki, and breakfast is a Japanese spread with grilled Miyagi salmon, tofu and more. Baby food is not served, but the staff can warm baby food you bring with you. If anyone has allergies or ingredients they would rather avoid, please discuss it with the ryokan in advance.
Baths and Onsen
There are two bathhouses with distinct characters, Rairai no Yu and Sato no Yu, plus a private-hire bath, the Hinoki Barrel Bath, which only staying guests may use. Sato no Yu flows straight from the source, with no added water and no recirculation. The barrel bath, wrapped in the scent of hinoki, is reserved by one group at a time for 45 minutes at 1,800 yen, and must be booked on the day of your stay. The spring water is a sodium chloride spring. There is no age limit for babies and toddlers in the communal baths, and a baby bath is available. Children may use the bath of the opposite sex only up to the lower grades of elementary school, through age 7.
Family-Friendly Features
Children's rates vary by age and by whether meals and bedding are included: 3,300 yen for children under school age with no meals and no bedding, 6,600 yen with meals, and 9,900 yen with meals and bedding. Children's amenities are provided for elementary school children and for children under school age from age 3 up, and yukata for children who have not yet started elementary school come in 3 sizes. On the other hand, cribs, baby futons and strollers are not available to borrow, and there is no playroom. Formula, baby food, diapers and other baby supplies are not sold here either, so bring everything you need. There is no dedicated space for nursing or diaper changes, but you can use the bench in the changing room of the communal bath. Baby bottles can be sterilized in the microwave if you bring your own bottle and sterilizing case; this is handled until 9:30 p.m. and again from 8:30 a.m. the next morning.
Access
The nearest airport is Sendai Airport, and there is no free shuttle bus from the airport. One route is to take the Sendai Airport Access Line to Sendai Station in about 25 minutes, then a bus from Sendai Station taking about 40 to 60 minutes; by taxi it is about 30 minutes from Sendai. From the Sendai-minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway it is about 15 minutes by car. Parking is free, with about 30 spaces, and a standard Hiace can be parked there.
