Overview

Oshu Akiu Onsen Rantei is a Japanese-style ryokan set on high ground in Akiu Onsen. The communal baths have soft tatami flooring that is not slippery, and both the men's and women's communal baths are stocked with children's items such as baby baths and diaper-changing tables. The onsen comes from the ryokan's own spring source and is colorless and clear, making it a recommended choice for a baby's first onsen. In summer there is also a shallow kids' pool, and the breakfast buffet offers baby food for young children as well as children's snacks.

Rooms

Pure Japanese-style tatami rooms come in two types, 10 tatami mats (1-5 guests) and 12 tatami mats (1-6 guests), both in Japanese-style architecture with views over the Akiu Onsen area. The rooms are equipped with a bath, a washlet toilet, air conditioning and heating. The Japanese-Western rooms place two single beds in a tatami room, and because they sit close to the elevator they are easy to use for guests with limited mobility; when 3 or more guests share one, futon bedding is laid out. For groups and three-generation families, there is also the VIP suite Kunshi (2-8 guests) and the special rooms Juko (2-8 guests) and Togen (2-5 guests), with sweeping views of the satoyama (wooded countryside) scenery. For business travelers and solo guests, there are Western-style twin rooms (20 sq m, 2 guests) and single rooms (14.5 sq m, 1 guest). Guest rooms come with children's amenities including slippers, a formula-preparation kettle, a sterilizing case, a diaper holder and a humidifier, and free items are available to borrow as well.

Dining

Breakfast is a buffet of more than 50 Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes themed on dashi (Japanese soup stock), served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. with last admission at 8:45 a.m. Handmade desserts by the in-house pastry chef round out the meal, and baby food for young children and children's snacks are available too. Dinner is a kaiseki course, served either as in-room dining or in the private dining restaurant Shunrantei. On plans that include meals, elementary school children are served a kids' meal or a set-tray meal, and preschool-age children a kids' meal. Food allergies can be accommodated as far as possible if you let the ryokan know at least 3 days before your stay. The a la carte extras include children's favorites such as a vegetable-packed Hamburg steak, a potato salad and sausage set, and hand-stretched somen noodles.

Baths and Onsen

The water comes from the ryokan's own spring source and is colorless and clear, which is why it is recommended even for a baby's first onsen. The communal baths have soft tatami flooring that is not slippery, so children and older guests can use them with peace of mind. Both the men's and women's communal baths are stocked with baby baths, chairs, toys, shampoo hats (brimmed caps that keep water out of a child's eyes), diaper-changing tables and diaper holders, so bathing with a young child is possible. A baby chair is available in the breakfast venue as well. There is no private-hire bath. In summer, around June to October, an outdoor pool also operates, with a section 95 cm deep for adults and a shallow 45 cm section for children; staying guests can use it free of charge.

Family-friendly features

Children's yukata are laid out in the lobby, where you choose the right size and take it with you. On the breakfast-included plan, co-sleeping is available for up to 2 children; elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate, and rates for infants and preschool-age children depend on whether meals and bedding are included: 4,400 yen with bedding and no meals, and 2,200 yen with no meals and no bedding (plans with meals are not accepted). Children aged 0 who need neither futon bedding nor meals stay free of charge; in that case, do not enter them in the guest count when booking, and tell the ryokan the number by phone or message. Strollers, baby-bottle formula-preparation warming cases, baby-bottle sterilizing cases, digital thermometers and ice pillows are also available to borrow. The shop sells diapers and baby food for children. On-site facilities include a children's playground, and the FLORA therapy room on Iyashi Street offers baby treatments and menus for pregnant guests. Checkout is at 10 a.m., but can be extended until 12 p.m. for 5,000 yen per room, including tax.

Access

A free shuttle bus runs from the East Exit of Sendai Station; reservations are required, and it departs the East Exit at 2:30 p.m. and leaves the ryokan at 10 a.m. The grounds have free parking for about 120 cars, with charging stations for electric vehicles. Guests with limited mobility and those traveling with young children can also arrange to have a dedicated space set aside.
