Okinawa with Kids: 11 Main Island Attractions and Nearby Hotels

When you take kids to Okinawa, the hard part usually isn't finding things to do. It's that everything is so spread out. Staying near the Churaumi area in the north means a drive of about 1.5 to 2 hours from Naha Airport, and a packed itinerary wears out kids and parents alike. This guide sorts 11 family attractions on the main island by area. For each one we list only the hours, prices, and facilities stated on the official website, followed by family-friendly places to stay in the same area. Pick the area first, then think about your kids' ages, and finally choose a hotel close to the sights.

When I plan Okinawa, I circle one area and fit both the sights and the hotel inside that circle. It's the best way to protect the kids' nap time.

There's also the Okichan Theater and the Dolphin Lagoon. The aquarium has announced that dolphin shows will be suspended from January 4 to January 9, 2027, and it monitors carbon dioxide levels inside and limits the number of visitors. Choosing attractions by age

Under 1

If you're pushing a stroller, start with indoor spots. DMM Kariyushi Aquarium officially promotes itself as fun on rainy days and with small children, and at Busena Marine Park you can watch fish from the Undersea Observatory without getting in the water. For a place to stay, consider The Busena Terrace with its free rental cribs, or Fukugi Terrace, which is certified as baby-welcoming.

Ages 1 to 2

At this age kids love to move but can't walk far, so attractions with something to ride work well. Nago Pineapple Park has the pineapple train and carts, and at Kouri Ocean Tower a cart takes you to the base of the tower. Ocean Expo Park has play equipment, but avoid using it in the rain.

Ages 3 to 5

Old enough to join feeding experiences. At DMM Kariyushi Aquarium kids can feed penguins and otters, and Neo Park Okinawa has animals plus a 1.2-kilometer train loop around the park. Marine activities at The Busena Terrace are open to children from age 2.

Elementary schoolers

The Wonder Museum at Okinawa Zoo & Museum offers hands-on science, and Ryukyu Mura has 60- and 90-minute mystery games plus shisa painting. JUNGLIA Okinawa's official website has a Family Guide, so check which rides suit your kids before you go.

FAQ

Can I use a stroller at Okinawa's attractions?

On their official websites, Ryukyu Mura states it is fully accessible, Southeast Botanical Gardens holds the "Barrier-Free of the Heart" certification, and Churaumi Aquarium has a dedicated accessibility page. Okinawa Zoo & Museum has announced that its escalator is out of service for replacement work, so allow extra time to get around with a stroller. For help deciding whether to bring one, see Stroller or baby carrier for Japan?.

Do the attractions have nursing rooms?

The official pages covered in this guide don't state where nursing rooms are, so check each attraction's official website for its in-house services or facility information before you go. As for hotels, HIYORI Ocean Resort Okinawa has a nursing room, and the large bath at REF Okinawa Arena has diaper changing tables.

Where can we go on a rainy day?

The official websites of both DMM Kariyushi Aquarium and Okinawa Zoo & Museum say they are fun in the rain. Avoid Ocean Expo Park's play equipment when it's raining, and note that Emerald Beach and Busena Marine Park suspend swimming or close when a typhoon comes through, so check the official notices on the day. For hotels where kids can have fun indoors too, see How to choose a hotel for a full day of rainy-day fun.

Should I buy tickets in advance?

Okinawa Zoo & Museum is free for ages 15 and under and ¥1,000 for ages 16 and over, and your ticket lets you re-enter the same day. Nago Pineapple Park's official website offers online-only tickets at 10% off, Southeast Botanical Gardens sells tickets online, and JUNGLIA Okinawa has a short-visit ticket at ¥2,970 for adults.

Okinawa's attractions are scattered from north to south, so staying in the area you most want to explore cuts down on daily driving. Kids Stay lists 60 family-friendly places to stay in Okinawa, and you can start browsing from family hotels on Okinawa's main island.
