The Moon Beach Museum Resort

The Moon Beach Museum Resort has stood on the seafront of Onna Village on Okinawa's main island since 1975, a resort hotel built to wrap around a crescent-shaped natural beach.

True to its name, the hotel is built around a 'museum' concept, with plants, paintings, and objets d'art lining the corridors and atriums throughout. Many family reviews mention that 'my child wanted to walk around on their own' or that 'it felt like an adventure,' and the hotel itself becomes a form of entertainment during a family trip with a lot of moving around.

The biggest draw for families is the year-round indoor heated atrium pool, which is unaffected by weather. Because it's heated even in winter, it can be enjoyed at any time of year, and several reviews mention 'we had no problem spending time at the pool even on a rainy day.' The outdoor lagoon pool operates from April to November. The private beach reachable directly from the restaurant is also shallow near the shore, and the flow of stepping straight from breakfast onto the sand is highly praised. There is also a snorkeling tour to the uninhabited island of Yo-jima, and some families report that even children who can't swim found it easy to join.

A welcome perk for families with small children is free breakfast and free co-sleeping for children aged 5 and under. Free rental of a crib and a stroller is also available (both require advance reservation). On the other hand, there is no baby food service, no kids' menu, and no shallow pool dedicated to kids, so families with younger babies should prepare their own supplies and food in advance for peace of mind. Food allergies can be accommodated with advance consultation.

Dining centers on the all-day dining venue 'Corallo,' where guests can enjoy a buffet of Japanese, Western, Chinese, and Okinawan (Ryukyu) cuisine. Breakfast is highly rated, and the ocean-view location also boosts guest satisfaction. The hotel also has a communal bath, but note in advance that it is a separate charge from the room rate (around JPY 600 per person) and only opens from the evening.

Access is about 60 minutes by car from Naha Airport. The hotel is in the Onna Village resort area, in a location that also makes it easy to visit the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the north. Note that there are many level changes (steps) throughout the hotel, and several reviews mention difficulty moving around with a stroller, so checking with the front desk at check-in for a route with fewer steps can make things easier when traveling with a baby.
