Satoumi-tei Kinparou Hontei is a small oceanfront inn of just 8 rooms, standing at the water's edge on the Oarai coast. The communal bath is filled with heated spring water from Oarai Isosaki Shrine, so you can bathe with the sea breeze around you, and country-style cooking is served at tables by the shoreline. Co-sleeping is not available, and babies and toddlers cannot be accommodated under any combination of meals and bedding. On the basic plan, children under school age can stay only in the Myojin room, and children of elementary school age have child rates set according to their grade level.
Rooms
There are 8 guest rooms in all, every one of them oceanfront. They stand about 30 meters from the water's edge and face southeast. Gansen and Kaimon are 51 sq m rooms with an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room plus a living room and a terrace; they have no in-room bath, so please use the communal bath, and they sleep 2 guests. Natsumi and Hirora are 61 sq m, with a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room plus a living room, a terrace and a semi-open-air bath, sleeping 3 guests. Magarimatsu and Funato are 61 sq m twin bedrooms with a seaside terrace and a semi-open-air bath, sleeping 2 guests. Myojin is an 87 sq m suite with a 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room, a 12-tatami living room, a twin bedroom and a semi-open-air bath, sleeping 5 guests; the living room also has a mini kitchen. Sodegaura is 85 sq m, with an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room, a 10-tatami dining-style living room, twin beds and a semi-open-air bath, sleeping 3 guests. In Magarimatsu, Funato, Gansen, Kaimon and Sodegaura, children who have not yet started elementary school are asked to refrain from staying.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are served at tables by the water's edge. There are 6 sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating tables with a fine view, each seating up to 3 people, and 2 private rooms with a garden facing the shore (one of 10 tatami mats for up to 4 guests, and one of 12 tatami mats for up to 6 guests). Dinner can start at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Dishes cannot be changed for ingredients you dislike or prefer, or for a different cooking method, and food allergies cannot be accommodated. Please check the content of your meals with the staff on the day of your stay. Reaching the dining area involves a few steps, so if that is difficult for you, you can arrange in-room dining in advance, but Sodegaura is the only room where this can be provided.
Baths
The communal bath comes in two forms, the Stone Bath and the Wooden Bath, filled with heated spring water from Oarai Isosaki Shrine. Bathing hours are from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the two baths alternating between these time slots. In the relaxation space for after your bath, chilled water, herbal tea, beer and other drinks are available free of charge. There is no private-hire bath. Six of the 8 rooms have a semi-open-air bath, so you can bathe in your room rather than using the communal bath.
Family-Friendly Features
Co-sleeping is not available. Babies and toddlers cannot be accommodated under any combination of meals and bedding. On the basic plan, children under school age can stay only in the Myojin room. On the "Oheyashoku de Rakuraku" in-room dining plan, children under school age can stay in the Natsumi and Hirora rooms, and if you would like to dine seated on chairs, you can choose the Sodegaura room. Child rates for elementary school children are 70% of the adult rate for the upper grades and 50% of the adult rate for the lower grades. Food allergies cannot be accommodated and dishes cannot be changed. Group bookings are limited to a maximum of 2 rooms, and if the two rooms wish to dine together, the booking must include either Myojin or Sodegaura.
Access
About 90 minutes by car from the 23 wards of Tokyo, and about 10 minutes from the Mito-Oarai IC on the Kita-Kanto Expressway and the Higashimito Road. By train, it is about 15 minutes from JR Mito Station to Oarai Station on the Oarai Kashima Line, then 7 minutes by taxi from Oarai Station. Parking for 20 cars is free and requires no reservation.
