Oarai Hitachinaka
Kid-Friendly Hotels in Oarai & Hitachinaka: Aquarium and Flower Park
From the doorstep of Aqua World Oarai to the nemophila and kochia fields of Hitachi Seaside Park — an Ibaraki family base with the sea and hot springs
Oarai and Hitachinaka have two of the biggest draws in Japan for families with children — Aqua World Oarai Aquarium and Hitachi Seaside Park — and yet the choice of places to stay is limited, which makes it hard to tell which ones actually suit a family. The lineup comes down to seaside hot spring hotels, whole-house villas, and city hotels around Katsuta Station, and each type is a distinctly different experience with kids in tow.
Of the 7 properties listed here, 4 are within walking distance of the sea or a beach, and 6 have Japanese-style or Japanese-Western rooms. Oarai Hotel, looking out over the Pacific, is all-inclusive and comes with family facilities such as a kids' room and loaner baby gear. Oarai Park Hotel, standing directly across from Aqua World Oarai, was renovated in March 2026 and now offers Japanese-Western rooms, rooms set up with futon bedding, and villas with kitchens. Isozaki Onsen Hotel New Hakuaki is a 21-room hot spring inn where every room is stocked with children's items such as a toilet training seat and a diaper bin, while Sunrise Villa Oarai is a whole-house rental with all three buildings facing the ocean. Around Katsuta Station, Hotel Crystal Palace and Hotel Crown Hills Katsuta make good bases for families driving to the seaside park.
On the other hand, policies vary from inn to inn: Satoumitei Kinparo Hontei, a small inn right at the water's edge, does not accept infants and limits which rooms preschoolers may use. It is worth checking the 2026 information on each hotel's official website before booking, especially regarding whether children may share a bed with parents, what bedding is provided, and which children's amenities are available.

Travel tips
Aqua World Oarai is reached by bus or car from Oarai Station, and Hitachi Seaside Park is about 15 minutes by bus from Katsuta Station. During nemophila (baby blue eyes, late April to early May) and kochia (burning bush, October) season, the surrounding roads and parking lots get congested, so aim to arrive right when the park opens or take public transportation. Oarai Sun Beach has a long, gentle shallow shelf that suits summer swimming, but check each year's operating dates for the lifeguard station and changing rooms.
Best season
The seaside park is at its best for the nemophila blooms in spring and the kochia in autumn; summer is for the beach and the aquarium, and winter for the aquarium and hot springs. Rooms are hard to get during flower season, so book early.
Getting there
About an hour and a half from Tokyo via the Joban Expressway to the Mito-Oarai IC; Katsuta Station is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Ueno on the Hitachi limited express. Oarai Station is about 15 minutes from Mito Station on the Kashima Rinkai Railway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which hotels are close to Aqua World Oarai?
expand_more
Oarai Park Hotel is a hot spring hotel standing directly across from the aquarium, and its March 2026 renovation added Japanese-Western rooms and villas with kitchens. Oarai Hotel and Sunrise Villa Oarai are also on the same stretch of Oarai coastline, just a few minutes away by car.
Are there hotels you would recommend with a baby?
expand_more
Isozaki Onsen Hotel New Hakuaki is a 21-room hot spring inn where every room is stocked with children's items such as a toilet training seat and a diaper bin. Oarai Hotel has a kids' room and lends out baby gear. Satoumitei Kinparo Hontei, by contrast, does not accept infants, so if you are traveling with a very young child, check each property's age policy first.
Where should we stay for the nemophila season at Hitachi Seaside Park?
expand_more
From late April to early May the area around the park is crowded, so the usual approach is to base yourself at Hotel Crystal Palace or Hotel Crown Hills Katsuta near Katsuta Station and head over right as the park opens in the morning. Rooms are hard to come by at this time of year, so book well in advance.
Is it inconvenient without a car?
expand_more
There are buses from Katsuta Station to Hitachi Seaside Park and from Oarai Station to the aquarium. That said, if you want to combine the seaside hotels of Oarai, the fish market, and the park in a single day, a car is far easier, and since every spot is close to the Mito-Oarai IC, most families here drive.
Is there enough for children to enjoy on a rainy day?
expand_more
Aqua World Oarai is a large indoor aquarium and the go-to choice in the rain. The factory tour at Mentai Park Oarai (a spicy pollock roe theme facility) is also indoors. Choosing a hotel with a hot spring gives you time to spend at the property itself whatever the weather.
