■ Guest rooms and baths in the main building The main building has three room types: an 8-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (for 4 guests), a Western-style twin (for 2 guests, up to 3) and a Western-style room with a loft (for 4 guests, up to 5). With its tatami floor, the Japanese-style room also suits families with babies. The baths are separate for men and women and come in two kinds, a stone bath and a tatami bath with a waterproof tatami floor, each with a tub large enough to share with family or friends. The tatami bath has a soft floor, so you can bathe small children there with peace of mind. The water is heated, not onsen water.

■ Two cottages where you can stay with pets On the south side of the main building's Retreat Ground stand two log-house cottages. The west cabin is a one-room, Finnish-made log house (30 sq m, for 2 guests, or up to 3 with an extra bed). The east cabin is a detached house with two bedrooms and a living-dining-kitchen area, equipped with a kitchen and laundry facilities (58 sq m, for 6 guests, with bunk beds). Both have an en-suite bathroom, a toilet and their own dog run, and you can stay with dogs, cats and other pets. Pets are not allowed in the main building.

■ The Retreat Ground lawn and winter fun In front of the main building, the Retreat Ground spreads out across a lawn the size of four tennis courts, where the family can play to their heart's content. In winter, Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort is only about 100 m away (within a 5-minute walk of the slopes), and skis and snowboards are available to borrow, which makes the pension an ideal base for a ski trip.
