Overview

Biwako Ryokusuitei is a ryokan in Ogoto Onsen on the western shore of Lake Biwa, with Mount Hiei rising behind it. Of its 70 guest rooms, 57 have an open-air bath supplied with onsen water, and every room looks out over Lake Biwa. Elementary school children can choose between a kaiseki course and a kids' meal, and baby food and children's wakame (seaweed) udon are also available. Children may stay beyond a room's capacity when co-sleeping, and stay plans for families traveling with a baby are available. There is no indoor or outdoor pool and no childcare service.

Rooms

There are 70 guest rooms, 57 of which have an open-air bath supplied with onsen water, and every room looks out over Lake Biwa. There are 12 Biwa no Kaze Japanese-style tatami rooms, each 50 sq m for 5 to 7 guests. In July 2026, the in-room open-air baths were renovated into hinoki (cypress) baths, generously sized at 1,300 mm by 995 mm so that two adults can bathe together. Yuga, on the fifth floor of the Biwa Sumire-kan wing, is a 34 sq m room with a semi-open-air view bath; the Japanese-style tatami version sleeps 2 to 5 guests and the Japanese-Western twin version sleeps 2 to 4. Manyo is 80 sq m for up to 8 guests, and dinner can be taken in a private room. There is also a Japanese-style triple bed type, with 2 beds set in a 15-tatami Japanese-style room; when 3 guests stay, 3 beds are provided. The veranda-glamping floor Koyu accommodates 4 guests, and low beds are used when 3 or more guests stay.

Dining

Elementary school children can choose between a kaiseki course with fewer dishes than the adult version, at 70% of the adult rate, and a kids' meal, at 50% of the adult rate. Children's wakame (seaweed) udon and plated baby food are also available at 880 yen each; please request them in advance or select them as an option. Food allergies can be accommodated as far as possible if you state the specific allergens when booking or by 3 days before your stay. In the Manyo and Koyu room types, dinner can be taken in a private room. Breakfast is a Japanese-style buffet where the dried fish is a favorite, with a small selection of Western items such as bread and eggs.

Baths and Onsen

The spring water is an alkaline simple onsen (a hypotonic alkaline onsen), colorless and clear, with a pH of 9.07. There are 2 communal baths and 2 open-air baths, and there is no private-hire bath. However, more than half of the guest rooms have an open-air bath using onsen water, so families who want the onsen to themselves can use the bath in their own room. The in-room open-air baths use 100% heated source water, and the open-air bath on the Koyu terrace is supplied around the clock, so its temperature can be adjusted.

Family-friendly features

Each room type has a set capacity, but children may stay beyond that capacity when co-sleeping without using a bed or futon. Advance contact by phone or email is required. If you choose the bedding-only, meals-only, or no-meals-and-no-bedding option, a facility usage fee of 1,000 to 3,000 yen is included, and the amount differs by room. A dedicated plan is also available for trips with a baby: the Welcome Baby plan, advertised as "Baby stays free! Comes with a 5-piece baby set for peace of mind!", starts at 24,060 yen before tax for 2 guests, and the benefit is limited to that plan. On the other hand, there is no indoor or outdoor pool and no childcare service. Barrier-free accommodations are available.

Access

From JR Kyoto Station, the JR Kosei Line reaches JR Ogoto-onsen Station in about 20 minutes. Call the ryokan once you arrive at the station and a free shuttle bus takes about 7 minutes; no advance reservation is needed. There is parking for 100 cars, free for guests throughout their stay.
