Mombetsu Prince Hotel

forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.23 out of 5 (3,056 reviews). Families who stayed for a child's sporting match praise the staff's kind service and the quality of the bath and rooms, and one family of four including two children reported that the hotel is older but thoroughly cleaned, so it posed no problem. On the other hand, some guests found the in-room toilet and bathroom inconvenient because of a step with no handrail, so take care if traveling with older family members.

Overview

Mombetsu Prince Hotel is a city hotel in Honcho, central Mombetsu, and its standout feature is the only natural onsen communal bath in Mombetsu. Rooms range widely from singles and twins to Japanese-style tatami rooms and an annex wing with kitchens, and for parties of 3 or more the hotel adds an extra bed or futon bedding. Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet of 70 items, priced at 660 yen for children ages 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school and free for children ages 2 and under. Under hotel policy, the number of co-sleeping children may not exceed the number of adults.

Rooms

The main building offers a wide range of rooms: the Standard Single (13 sq m, with a semi-double bed measuring 120 cm by 195 cm), the Standard Double (with a king-size bed measuring 200 cm by 195 cm), and the Standard Twin and Deluxe Twin, which accommodate 3 guests with a twin plus an extra bed. There is also the Modern Japanese-style tatami room (32 sq m, on the top sixth floor), where up to 3 guests sleep on mattress beds and parties of 4 or more use Japanese futon bedding. A connecting room joining the Modern Japanese-style room and a Standard Twin (a Japanese-Western room of 53 sq m) sleeps up to 5 guests in beds, with futon bedding added for 6 or more, making it a good fit for families who want two rooms. A short distance from the main building, the annex has 7 rooms, all with a mini kitchen; no check-in at the front desk is needed, so you can go straight to your room. The Casual Suite (78 sq m) has a terrace and a jacuzzi bath, with the living room and bedroom separate, and sleeps up to 7 guests: parties of 3 to 5 use a sofa bed, and for parties of 6 to 7 two guests share the double bed. The Executive Twin (56 sq m) also has a terrace and a jacuzzi bath and can be connected with the room next door, which suits trips with two households.

Dining

Dinner is entirely by reservation, with menus that include crab dishes unique to Mombetsu, seafood dishes, makunouchi bento (a compartmented boxed meal) and hokke (atka mackerel) set meals. Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet served from 6:45 a.m. to 9 a.m., with 70 items in all, from local milk, salads and fruit to a drinks corner, and allergens are indicated with illustrations. Prices are 2,200 yen for adults (junior high school students and older), 1,540 yen for children (elementary school students), 660 yen for children ages 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school, and free for children ages 2 and under. Another popular option is katte-don, a rice bowl you build yourself from sashimi chosen at the seafood corner.

Baths and Onsen

The communal bath is fed by the only natural onsen in Mombetsu, and it also has a bubble bath, an open-air bath and a sauna room. Hours are 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with bathing ending at midnight, and 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next morning, with bathing ending at 9:30 a.m.; because the entertainment district is close by, the bath is closed overnight to prevent accidents. Under Hokkaido prefectural ordinance and out of consideration for other bathers, only children who have not yet started elementary school and are 120 cm or shorter may use the bathing area designated for the opposite sex. Towels are not stocked in the bath area, so bring the towels from your room. The spring water leaves the floor slippery underfoot, so please take care while bathing.

Family-friendly features

When children co-sleep, the number of co-sleeping children may not exceed the number of adults. Children's yukata are set out in the first-floor lobby and are free to use; samue (two-piece Japanese loungewear) in large and small sizes are in the lobby as well. The breakfast buffet indicates allergens with illustrations, and meals accommodating allergies can be arranged, though the extent of what can be accommodated should be confirmed in advance. Many stay plans have children's rates.

Access

The hotel sits in Honcho, central Mombetsu, within easy strolling distance of the Gariya Zone, where leisure facilities are clustered, and of the entertainment district lined with restaurants and izakaya (Japanese pubs). It is about 10 minutes by car from Mombetsu Airport, or about 13 minutes on the public bus, which is free, and about a 10-minute walk from Mombetsu Bus Terminal.
