Set on a plateau surrounded by Shikotsu-Toya National Park, The Westin Rusutsu Resort is known for its two-level maisonette rooms, every one of them at least 76 sq m. Children of elementary school age and under stay free when co-sleeping, and the hotel is well set up for families, with cribs and toilet-training seats for young children available to borrow free of charge, as well as meal menus for children. At Westin Rusutsu Onsen, children up to age 6 can bathe together with a parent.
Rooms
All guest rooms are maisonette-style and generously sized, from 76 to 108 sq m. Each has two levels, with the bedroom upstairs and the living room downstairs. Room types are chosen by group size. The 76 to 85 sq m rooms sleep up to 4, with two single beds and two stowaway beds. The 88 sq m rooms sleep up to 5 with three beds, and the 108 sq m rooms sleep up to 7 with five beds. The beds are Westin's own Heavenly Bed 2.0. All rooms are non-smoking, and separate smoking areas are provided. Children of elementary school age and under stay free when co-sleeping, and accommodation charges apply from junior high school age. Please note that rooms on floors 11 to 15 will undergo renovation work from April 2026 through the end of November.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are buffets at the restaurant Atrium, and lunch is à la carte. At Atrium, the buffet is free for children under school age, and the Eat Well kids' menu is available at lunch. At the restaurants other than the buffet, a children's course or a children's kaiseki (multi-course Japanese) menu can be chosen for dinner, and both can be used with a child's dinner voucher. Every outlet has children's chairs, spoons and forks, and the buffet venue also has children's plates. If your child has a food allergy, let Atrium know and the kitchen staff will guide you. At the other restaurants, a registered dietitian will advise you if you notify the hotel at least one week before your stay. Baby food itself is not provided, but baby food you bring with you can be warmed in a microwave or with hot water.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath of Westin Rusutsu Onsen is on the second floor, with natural onsen water, an airy open-air bath and a permanent dry sauna to ease away the fatigue of your journey. The spring water is a bicarbonate spring, expected to help with muscle pain and general health. Mixed bathing is allowed for children up to age 6. No towels are provided at the communal bath, so you need to bring the towels from your room. Rusutsu Onsen Kotobuki no Yu, in a separate building within the resort, is also free for staying guests, and its bathing area has children's chairs and a roomy washing area that is easy for parents and children to use together.
Family-Friendly Features
Cribs are available to borrow free of charge and measure about 115 x 65 cm. Numbers are limited, so advance reservation is required. Toilet-training seats for young children that attach to the toilet in your room, and step stools for small children, are also provided free of charge (both in limited numbers, with advance reservation). A reclining stroller that can face either way is available to rent for 1,000 yen per stroller per day; strollers rented at the SE counter are for children from 1 month to 36 months old weighing up to 15 kg. Children's yukata are provided free of charge in 150 cm, 130 cm and 120 cm sizes, and you can request one at the front desk on the day. The nursing room has a diaper-changing area and hot water for formula, and there are toilets just for children as well. When parents want a little time to themselves for skiing, golf and the like, a childcare service is available by the hour, with experienced childcare staff looking after children in a bright space with large windows. To use it, please ask at the front desk of your hotel. Disposable diapers, wet wipes, powdered formula and baby food can be bought at Welcome, the shop on the first floor.
Access
The hotel is 75 km southwest of Sapporo, on a plateau surrounded by Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It is about 90 minutes by car from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport, and a paid shuttle is available by reservation. From JR Toya Station or JR Kutchan Station, it is 60 minutes by bus. From Sapporo, the free Rusutsu-go shuttle bus runs by reservation made by 3 p.m. the day before. From New Chitose Airport, the paid Big Runs-go bus runs by reservation made by midnight 7 days in advance. The open-air parking area has 244 spaces, free for staying guests with no reservation needed. A convenience store is within a 5-minute walk, and the Rusutsu Resort amusement park is reached by monorail. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and checkout is at 12 p.m.
