Overview

Kita-Yuzawa Onsen Yumoto Horohoro Sanso is an onsen ryokan in the Kita-Yuzawa hot spring village, built around Japanese-style tatami rooms. Most are 12-tatami rooms sleeping up to 6, and some Japanese-style rooms have twin beds. On the first basement floor, alongside the communal bath and open-air bath, there is a private-hire bath, available by reservation only, stocked with children's body soap and shampoo hats. One co-sleeping child is accepted per adult, and staff can warm baby food and supply hot water for formula. There is no elevator in the building, and the third and fourth floors are connected only by stairs.

Rooms

Guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms of about 12 tatami mats, sleeping up to 6. There are also rooms for 1-2 guests with twin beds set in a Japanese-style tatami room, which likewise look out over the nature of Kita-Yuzawa from a broad window-side space. Up to 6 futons can be laid out. All rooms are non-smoking and come with a color television, refrigerator, telephone and heating and cooling with adjustable temperature, and humidifiers are available to borrow. Children's loungewear for wearing around the ryokan, called Yupatcha, comes in sizes from 100 to 150 cm, and if the size does not fit, it can be exchanged at the front desk.

Dining

Dinner and breakfast are both buffets served in the restaurant, centered on Japanese dishes, with freshly fried tempura among the favorites. Children of all ages can use the buffet, and they are generally served the same food as adults. Specified allergenic ingredients are labeled, and if you let staff know when booking or at the front desk or the restaurant, the hotel will accommodate food allergies as far as it can. Baby food can be warmed in the microwave if you ask at the front desk, and hot water for formula is provided in the kettle in your room, with more available from the front desk if you run out.

Baths and Onsen

The spring water is a simple spring, and the communal bath, open-air bath and private-hire bath are all on the first basement floor. The communal bath and open-air bath are available 24 hours, except from 5 to 6 a.m., when they close for cleaning and for the men's and women's baths to be switched. In the women's bath, boys may enter only if they have not yet started elementary school; boys of elementary school age and older may not enter. The first basement floor also has a private-hire bath, available by reservation only, stocked with children's body soap, shampoo hats (brims that keep water out of a child's eyes) and toys. Children of elementary school age and under may use the ganbanyoku (heated-stone sauna) only when accompanied by a guardian. Towels and bath towels are not kept in the changing room, so bring the ones provided in your room.

Family-Friendly Points

Co-sleeping children are accepted up to one child per adult, within the room's capacity. Children ages 1 to 2 are 1,100 yen, plus an additional 3,300 yen if they use a futon. For children ages 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school, co-sleeping without a futon but with the same dinner as adults is 4,400 yen, while using a futon only is 50% of the adult rate. Children's rates require a booking that includes 2 or more adults; with 1 adult and 1 child, both are charged the adult rate. There is no elevator in the building, so guests move by stairs or escalator, and the third and fourth floors are connected only by stairs, which calls for care if you are using a stroller. One wheelchair is available to borrow free of charge. There is no pool at the ryokan, but guests can use the pool at its sister property, Mori no Soraniwa, reached by the bath-hopping shuttle bus.

Access

Shuttle buses run every day from Sapporo Station and from New Chitose Airport, at the same fare for adults and children. If you book your stay by phoning the ryokan or through its website, the shuttle bus is free. Parking is available for about 100 cars, free of charge. The nearest interchange is Date IC on the Doo Expressway, about a 40-minute drive away.
