Overview
Kawatana Grand Hotel Otafuku is a garden ryokan at Kawatana Onsen in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi. Co-sleeping is available up to age 6, and children can choose between a kids' kaiseki course for elementary school children and a kids' meal for those who have not yet started elementary school. The Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms in the main building are spacious at 10 tatami mats or more, and children's yukata (in large, medium and small), children's tableware, baby chairs and diaper bins are available to borrow. The detached Hanatsubaki rooms have a natural hot-spring open-air bath in the room, so parents and children can enjoy the onsen without worrying about other guests. The special rooms and the penthouse, however, do not accept children, and the detached room with an onsen bath in the Club Area is for ages 13 and over only.
Rooms
The Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms in the main building sleep up to 6 guests and are all roomy standard rooms of 10 tatami mats or more, where families and groups can settle in with a view over the quiet Kawatana countryside. The 4x Awase Quartet has four beds in a Western-style layout (twin and twin) plus a living room, sleeps up to 4 guests, and looks out on the gentle line of the mountains. The detached Hanatsubaki rooms, all 6 of them, sleep 4 to 5 guests and have a natural hot-spring hinoki open-air bath, so the onsen is simply the room's own bath. On the other hand, children are asked to refrain from staying in the special rooms, Chikusuitei and Ryokusuitei, and in the Korutou penthouse. Garyubai, the detached room with an onsen bath in the Club Area, is for guests ages 13 and over only.
Dining
Breakfast is the Kawatana Morning buffet, served from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Kaede Terrace dining room. Dinner is mainly kaiseki cuisine, and some plans also offer in-room dining. Children's meals are divided by age: elementary school children ages 6 to 12 can book the kids' kaiseki plan with one night and two meals for 9,900 yen, while children ages 3 to 6 who have not yet started elementary school can book the kids' meal plan for 6,600 yen. From JR Kawatana Onsen Station it is about a 20-minute walk or about 3 minutes by taxi. A shuttle from Kawatana Onsen Station runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and requires an advance reservation. From Shin-Shimonoseki Shinkansen Station there is a shuttle departing at 4 p.m., which also requires an advance reservation. Parking is free, with 200 spaces.
