Hinoyama Youth Hostel Kaikyo no Kaze looks out over the Kanmon Straits. It is run self-service style to keep rates low, and there are family-only plans that give you a whole room to yourselves. Among the rooms popular with families are bunk-bed rooms with a tatami area. Breakfast for preschool-age children (500 yen) and a kids' fugu (pufferfish) set are also available. Rooms
At Hinoyama Youth Hostel Kaikyo no Kaze, every room looks out over the Kanmon Straits. On the family-only plan, parties of 2 use a Western-style twin room with a tatami area (18.5 sq m), while parties of 3 or more use a Japanese-Western room with bunk beds and tatami. The bunk-bed Japanese-Western rooms come in a version for 3 to 4 guests (8 tatami mats) and one for 4 to 8 guests (24.5 sq m), and both are popular with families with children thanks to the tatami. Bath towels, sleepwear and razors need to be brought with you. The barrier-free room (Room 101, Kanmonkyo) has its own bathroom and washbasin area, and it can also be used as a "Fours" quad room with 4 single beds (37 sq m, sleeping 2 to 4 guests).
Dining
Dinner requires a reservation, and breakfast is served in the dining hall from 7:30 a.m., also by reservation. Breakfast for preschool-age children can be arranged for 500 yen; please write this in the remarks field when you book. From October 1, 2025 until around mid-March 2026 a full fugu (pufferfish) course is served, and there is a kids' fugu set as well, at 1,800 yen for elementary school children and 1,300 yen for preschool-age children. The kids' fugu set is not served on its own, and it is only for guests who can check in by 6 p.m. At the barbecue site on the terrace, groups of 10 or more can enjoy a barbecue while taking in the spectacular view of the straits. Stays are run on a self-service basis, with guests setting up their own futon bedding and serving and clearing their own meals; when you have the fugu full course or the barbecue, no serving or clearing is needed.

From the bus stop at JR Shimonoseki Station, take the bus bound for the Kokumin Shukusha (public lodge); it is 15 minutes to the last stop, Hinoyama Kokumin Shukusha, then a 3-minute walk. If you get off at the Mimosusogawa bus stop, it is a 10-minute walk. Parking is free on a first-come, first-served basis, and large buses can park as well.
