forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.27 out of 5 (520 reviews). Guests praise the views from the open-air bath reached by mountain railway or trolley, and some say their children loved the trolley and the ryokan's events, and that the kids enjoyed the popcorn. Satisfaction with dinner and breakfast is fairly high. On the other hand, some reviews mention room doors that are hard to open and close, a smell from the air conditioning, and cramped in-room toilets.

Overview

Hishino Onsen Tokiwakan is a ryokan at Hishino Onsen, at the foot of Mount Asama in Komoro, Nagano, with an open-air view bath, Kumo no Suke, that you reach on the ryokan's own mountain railway. The family Japanese-style tatami room type in the Saiuntei wing sleeps up to 8, and the Japanese-style room with beds type in the main building has low beds permanently set up in a tatami room. Children aged 2 and under are not charged the accommodation rate (meals and futon bedding are charged separately). A baby bath and a baby chair are available to borrow, and there is a microwave you can use for baby food. Dinner differs for elementary school children and for ages 3 to 5, and the course dinner includes a kids' meal.

Rooms

There are 10 room types across the main building, the Saiuntei wing and the Compartment rooms. The renovated Japanese-style tatami room type in the main building has a tatami room and a broad window-side space, with a bath and toilet, and sleeps 2 to 5 guests. The main building's Japanese-Western room type has two semi-double Simmons beds and a raised 4-tatami Japanese-style area, and sleeps 2 to 4 guests; for 3 or more guests, futons can be laid on the tatami section. The main building's Western-style room type is a 40.7 sq m barrier-free room that sleeps up to 3 using the sofa bed. There are no steps inside the room, so you can move from the bed to the toilet while staying in a wheelchair. The main building's Japanese-style room with beds type has two low beds and one sofa bed permanently set up in a tatami room. In the Saiuntei wing, the family Japanese-style tatami room type (17.5 tatami mats) sleeps up to 8 guests, and the family Japanese-Western room type also sleeps up to 8. The Saiuntei maisonette type (rooms 453 and 454) has a ceramic semi-open-air bath on the lower floor and sleeps 2 to 6 guests; this bath is not filled with onsen water. The Compartment rooms are lined with lockable private spaces and come in a 6-Bed type (75 sq m), a 4-Bed type (up to 4 guests) and a 2-Bed + 2-Loft type. None of these types has a bath. The 4-Bed and 2-Bed + 2-Loft types have steep stairs up to the loft, so guests are asked not to use them with children under 6, and the usage notes for the 2-Bed + 2-Loft type also decline children aged 5 and under. There are 3 steps at the entrance to the Compartment rooms.

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are both served in the restaurant; in-room dining is not available. For dinner there are plans with a course featuring the ryokan's signature koi no umani (carp simmered in a sweet soy glaze) and plans that include a buffet of side dishes. Breakfast is buffet-style. For elementary school children (ages 6 to 12), dinner on the buffet plans is starters and sashimi plus the buffet. With the course dinner, they can choose either the adult course with less of the simmered carp, or a kids' meal plus Hamburg steak. Children aged 3 to 5 who have not yet started school help themselves to whatever they like from the buffet on the buffet plans, and get a Shokado-style kids' meal (served in a divided bento box) with the course dinner. Children aged 2 and under, who are not charged the accommodation rate, can also order the dinner buffet (2,750 yen). Allergies are accommodated as far as possible, but some requests may not be met because of the kitchen's facilities, so please discuss them by phone when you book.

Baths and Onsen

The water is natural onsen, a weakly alkaline simple spring, and there is a communal bath inside the building as well as the open-air view bath Kumo no Suke. The ryokan's Q&A describes it as a colorless, clear alkaline simple onsen; because the source water is cool, it is heated, and it is also recirculated and filtered. You go up to Kumo no Suke on the mountain railway, a small cable car 130 m long, and according to the ryokan's plan information you can bathe there from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next morning. Children cannot ride the mountain railway on their own. The communal bath inside the building is open all day except during cleaning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the tubs have handrails. At present, only the women's bath has a swing you can enjoy in the bath. Whether children in diapers can go into the tubs is not stated, so please check in advance.

Family-Friendly Features

Children aged 2 and under are not charged the accommodation rate; if they use meals or futon bedding, each is charged individually, and charges apply from age 3. According to the ryokan's Q&A (as of July 1, 2025), for children under 3 you order only what you need: the kids' buffet is 2,750 yen, futon bedding 1,100 yen and a yukata 550 yen. The same Q&A gives the rate for elementary school children as 70% of the adult rate, and for children under school age (ages 3 to 6) as 5,500 yen, excluding special plans. (The young children's dinner menu covers ages 3 to 5 not yet in elementary school, separately from these rate categories.) The number of children who can co-sleep per bed is not stated, and there is no mention of cribs or baby futons. A baby bath and a baby chair can be borrowed from the lending corner at the front desk. The manga and massage corner on the 1st floor has a microwave you can use for baby food and more, plus a toy-lending corner, and every guest room has an electric hot-water kettle and an empty refrigerator for anything you bring. Humidifiers are also available to borrow. Outdoors, you can feed Gako, the duck on Tokiwagaike Pond, with feed sold at the shop (400 yen). The pony that used to live here has moved to the Komoro City Zoo and is no longer here.
