Chorakuen is a large onsen ryokan in Tamatsukuri Onsen in Matsue, Shimane. Alongside Ryugu no Yu, a 120-tsubo mixed-gender open-air bath, there are several baths fed straight from the source, including indoor bathhouses that alternate between men and women, plus the private-hire bath Seisen, which requires a reservation and uses spring water diluted with fresh water. Seisen is designed with no steps from the entrance through to the bathing area, so families with young children can use it easily. Children's rates, whether babies and toddlers are accepted, and whether co-sleeping is allowed all vary by plan, and a kids' meal is available.
Rooms
Guest rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms. Room-only and bed-and-breakfast plans use tatami rooms of 8 to 10 tatami mats, sleeping 1 to 4 guests. The standard rooms Daisenkaku and Gyokusenkaku are 10 to 12.5 tatami mats, on floors 3 through 7, with four-layer futon mattresses and down duvets by Tokyo Nishikawa, a bath and toilet, and an air purifier with a humidifying function. There are also themed rooms: the corner rooms Sosenka and Okoka, each with 2 semi-double beds (for 2 guests); Ryokuteika and Ourenka, each with 3 single beds (for 2 to 3 guests); Kotenka and Ranpuka, each with 3 semi-double beds (for 2 to 3 guests); Hakuginka, with 4 beds and a bar counter (for 2 to 4 guests); and Daisenkaku (with beds), with 2 beds (for 2 guests). Detached rooms sit beyond the garden: the detached room Washuntei has its own indoor rock bath and can be used by children, while the detached room Chishin-an and the mountain-villa special rooms Kotobuki no Ma and Tokiwa no Ma do not allow in-room dining and cannot be used by children. The Aioi annex is a special room limited to 2 adults.
Dining
Meals are not served in guest rooms; they are served in the dining areas and private dining rooms. If you would like a private dining room, an additional 3,300 yen per room including tax applies, and because numbers are limited you need to request one in advance. For children there is a kids' meal that combines udon, fried shrimp, a small chawanmushi savory egg custard, karaage fried chicken, potatoes, simmered Hamburg steak, seared salmon sashimi, a wakame seaweed rice ball, pudding and fruit; the contents may change. Food allergies can be accommodated as far as possible if you let the ryokan know in advance, but they cannot be handled on the day of your stay.
Baths and Onsen
The ryokan's highlight is Ryugu no Yu, a 120-tsubo mixed-gender open-air bath, with all of its water flowing straight from the source. Because it is mixed-gender, bathing wear for men and for women is provided in the changing rooms and is worn while bathing. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. There are also the indoor bathhouses Keisen and Kasen, which alternate between men and women (5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to midnight), and the private-hire bath Seisen, which requires a reservation (4 p.m. to 9 p.m., 45 minutes per booking, 880 yen to use). Seisen is designed with no steps from the entrance through to the bathing area, so families with young children can use it easily. Onsen water is piped to the bathrooms in the guest rooms as well, and some rooms, including the detached ones, have their own open-air bath or indoor rock bath.

On the most popular plan, for example, one child may co-sleep, elementary school children pay 70% of the adult rate, and babies and toddlers are accepted at 2,200 to 11,000 yen depending on the combination of meals and bedding. Junior high school students and older pay the adult rate. On the room-only plan, by contrast, elementary school children cannot be accommodated at all, and babies and toddlers are accepted only on a no-meals, bedding-included basis at 3,300 yen. The bed-and-breakfast plan does not allow co-sleeping and does not accept babies or toddlers. It is essential to check each plan's conditions for children before booking. As for rooms, the detached Chishin-an, the mountain-villa special rooms Kotobuki no Ma and Tokiwa no Ma, and the Aioi annex cannot be used by children, so families need to choose another room type.
Access
The ryokan is about 10 minutes by taxi from JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station and about 20 minutes by car from Matsue Station. There is free parking for 40 cars, and a free shuttle bus runs to and from Tamatsukuri Onsen Station. Checkout is at 10 a.m., though the ryokan may accommodate a later departure for an additional charge.
