Tamatsukuri Onsen Family Hotels: A Baby-Gentle Hot Spring Near Izumo

Tamatsukuri Onsen, in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is one of San'in's oldest hot springs, with a long history recorded even in the "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki," a regional gazetteer from the Nara period. Widely known as a "beauty-skin hot spring," its calm hot-spring town lines a river with ryokan, and — fittingly for an area long known for making magatama comma-shaped beads — magatama-themed spots are scattered along the banks of the Tamayu River. Because the hot-spring town is so compact, it's easy to enjoy a relaxed stroll in a yukata robe even with young children in tow.

Its location is another point that makes it well suited to family travel. It has good access to Matsue City, home of the National Treasure Matsue Castle and Lake Shinji, as well as Izumo Taisha Shrine, famous for matchmaking, making it a convenient base for sightseeing in the San'in region. This is an area where it's easy to build a plan that combines a relaxed hot-spring stay with daytime sightseeing around Izumo and Matsue.
