Hawai Onsen Bokoro is an onsen ryokan in Hawai Onsen, Tottori. Across a red pier lies an open-air bath out on the lake, unlike anything else in Japan, and together with the communal baths inside the ryokan, all four baths for men and women are fed straight from the source. Guest rooms include the Taisuikaku and Kojokaku wings and the Yu-no-Su rooms with their own open-air bath, and children's rates are set out in detail for elementary school children and for children under school age. Children under school age can also join the onsen-egg-making experience free of charge. There is no private-hire bath, and all rooms are non-smoking.
Rooms
Guest rooms are divided among the Taisuikaku wing, the Kojokaku wing, the Yu-no-Su rooms with an open-air bath, and the special room. In Taisuikaku there are spacious 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms, as well as Japanese-Western rooms of 8 tatami mats plus twin beds at 45 sq m. Kojokaku has relaxing Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 and 12 tatami mats, and Executive Room Sunrise, a designer Japanese-style tatami room with Ryukyu tatami, at 45 sq m; the wing's corner room is 15 tatami mats plus sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating at 90 sq m. Among the Yu-no-Su rooms with an open-air bath, the Orient is 45 sq m for 2 to 4 guests and the Premium is 60 sq m for 2 to 6 guests, and every one of them has its own open-air bath fed straight from the source. The special room is 130 sq m for 2 to 10 guests. In the standard rooms the in-room bath uses water heated by boiler; onsen water is piped only to the special room and to the Yu-no-Su rooms with an open-air bath.
Dining
Breakfast is served buffet-style in the second-floor banquet hall from 6:45 to 9 a.m. Local dishes line the tables, including beef-bone ramen, curry with Tottori wagyu beef, miso soup with onishijimi clams and fried Daisen chicken, and the biggest favorite is the dashimaki rolled omelet. For dinner, guests in Taisuikaku dine in the banquet hall, while Kojokaku guests dine in a private dining room. Children's rates come with a kids' kaiseki course or a kids' plate, for elementary school children and children under school age alike. Food allergies can be accommodated if you get in touch at least 3 days before your stay; note that preparing anything outside the regular menu may involve an additional charge, and certain menu requests may be declined.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water at Hawai Onsen is a weak salt spring that wells up from the bed of Lake Togo. It is served entirely free-flowing from the source, with no water added and no reheating. Across the red pier are the open-air baths out on the lake: Choyo-no-Yu is for men at night and women in the morning, while Sekiyo-no-Yu is for women at night and men in the morning. Inside the ryokan are Shinwa-no-Yu, which has a semi-open-air bath, and Tennyo-no-Yu, which has a sauna and a cold-water bath; these alternate between men and women in the morning and evening. Day-use bathing is not offered, and there is no private-hire bath or family bath. The open-air baths on the lake have no toilet, and shampoo and body soap can neither be used nor brought in there.

Access
The ryokan is 10 minutes by car from JR Kurayoshi Station, and 80 minutes from the Innosho IC on the Chugoku Expressway via National Route 179. The shuttle bus from JR Kurayoshi Station must be reserved by the day before. Parking for up to 100 cars is free of charge.
