Overview
Kaike Seaside Hotel Umi no Shiki is an oceanfront onsen hotel facing the Sea of Japan. The West Wing has Western-style rooms, while the East Wing has Japanese-style tatami rooms, Japanese-Western rooms and twin rooms. As a rule, the West Wing's Western-style rooms cannot be used by guests traveling with children, and only the East Wing twin rooms allow co-sleeping for children who have not yet started elementary school. The communal bath and open-air bath use salt onsen water flowing directly from the source, and a private-hire family bath and private-hire open-air bath can also be used by reservation. A kids' meal is prepared for children below elementary school age, and a swimming beach is right in front of the hotel, 30 seconds away on foot.
Rooms
The hotel is divided into a West Wing and an East Wing, connected by an underground passage and an outdoor walkway. The West Wing has Western-style rooms only. The Corner Twin, Resort Single, Waterside Single and Semi-Double rooms (18-23 sq m each) have no bath of their own, so guests use the communal bath; only the Corner Double (23 sq m, with bathroom and toilet, and a bed 180 cm wide) has a bath in the room. The East Wing has Japanese-style tatami rooms, Japanese-Western rooms and twin rooms. The 18-tatami Japanese-style room (with toilet) takes 2 to 8 guests and can accommodate up to 8. The 10-tatami corner Japanese-style room and the 7.5-tatami Japanese-style room (each with bathroom and toilet) take 2 to 5 guests and 1 to 3 guests respectively. The Special Japanese-Western room (54 sq m, with bathroom and toilet) takes 2 to 5 guests, and the East Wing Twin (28.5 sq m, with a shower room and no bathtub) is for 1 to 2 guests. The in-room baths in the Corner Double, the Special Japanese-Western room, the 10-tatami corner Japanese-style room and the 7.5-tatami Japanese-style room are not onsen, so guests who want an onsen soak use the communal bath or the open-air bath. As a rule, the West Wing's Western-style rooms cannot be used by guests traveling with children; only in the East Wing Twin can up to 2 children who have not yet started elementary school stay by co-sleeping. Futon bedding is not available to borrow and extra beds are not provided, so a child who needs a bed pays the same rate as an adult.

Both dinner and breakfast are served in the East Wing; no meals are served in the West Wing. The communal bath Miho no Yu and the open-air bath, both on the second floor of the West Wing, use salt onsen water flowing directly from the source and are available from 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Kaike Onsen is a chloride spring said to be good for the skin, to help burn fat and to ease atopic dermatitis; because the source water is very hot, it is diluted with water. On the second floor of the East Wing there are 2 types of private-hire bath, both by reservation: the private-hire open-air bath Shiokaze (3,300 yen for 40 minutes) and the private-hire family bath Kaine (2,200 yen for 40 minutes), which has a large tub where a family can bathe without worrying about other guests. Both are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis after check-in and can be used from 3 p.m. to 9 a.m. Guests with tattoos cannot use the communal bath, the open-air bath or the private-hire baths.

Children's rates differ by plan and are calculated automatically when you enter the number of guests by age at the time of booking. Junior high school students and older pay the adult rate, and the child rate that includes neither meals nor futon bedding can only be selected for children up to age 2. If you book a plan for 2 or more adults as 1 adult plus 1 child, the child is charged the adult rate. The building and guest rooms are not barrier-free and there are places with steps, and part of the underground passage connecting the West and East wings has stairs, so take care when moving around with a stroller. Humidifiers are available to borrow for guest rooms, which helps on stays with small children when dryness is a concern. Some plans come with a late checkout benefit until 11 a.m., instead of the usual 10 a.m.

By car, take the Chugoku Expressway from Ochiai JCT to the Yonago Expressway and exit at the Yonago IC; from there it is about 10 minutes heading toward Sakaiminato. By train, it is about 2 hours from JR Okayama Station to JR Yonago Station on a Hakubi Line limited express, then about 15 minutes by taxi or bus from Yonago Station. By bus, it is about 15 minutes from JR Yonago Station to the Kaike Onsen stop, then about a 2-minute walk. By air, it is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Haneda Airport to Yonago Kitaro Airport, then about 20 minutes by taxi or rental car. There is free parking for 80 cars. Kaike Onsen Beach is right in front, 30 seconds' walk from the hotel.
