Overview
Asotsuru Onsen Lodge Mura sits on high ground in Oguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto, and every room has its own natural onsen open-air bath. Rooms come in two types: 7-tatami-mat and 9-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami rooms. There is no communal bath in the building, so your family can bathe on your own in your room's open-air bath, 24 hours a day. The spring water is a simple onsen, and the lodge says even babies can bathe in it. Stays are free for children aged 2 and under, and the barbecue and sukiyaki dinners come in half-size portions for preschool-age children. The management building has a space with picture books and play equipment for small children.
Rooms
Rooms come in two types, 7-tatami-mat and 9-tatami-mat Japanese-style tatami rooms, and all 13 rooms have their own natural onsen open-air bath. The 9-tatami room with open-air bath sleeps 2 to 5 guests, and the 7-tatami room with open-air bath sleeps 1 to 4. The lodge notes that the 7-tatami room is a little cramped for 4 adults, so larger families may prefer a 9-tatami room. Each room has a TV, a refrigerator, a heater and a kettle. Towels, toothbrushes and yukata are not provided in the rooms, so bring your own or buy or rent them at the front desk. Toothbrushes sell for 60 yen and towels for 110 yen, bath towels and yukata can be rented for 210 yen each, and a hair dryer is available to borrow free of charge. The rooms have no kitchen, and bringing in cooking equipment such as portable gas stoves or hot plates is not permitted at all. No information is published about cribs or baby futons, so if you need them, please check when booking.
Dining
No meal plans include breakfast. Instead, bread and coffee are provided, to be eaten in your room. Dinner is served at the restaurant in the management building, and plans that include dinner offer a barbecue on the restaurant's terrace or sukiyaki (a winter-only menu from November to March). For preschool-age children, a half-size barbecue or sukiyaki dinner is available for 1,650 yen, with orders taken by phone. Outside food and drink cannot be brought into the restaurant; extra dishes and a range of soft drinks can be ordered during the meal. The dining room is open until 8 p.m. Meals in your room are limited to food that needs no cooking, such as boxed lunches or cup noodles, and barbecuing outside the rooms is not allowed either.
Baths and Onsen
There is no communal bath or indoor bath in the building; the only baths are the private open-air baths attached to each room. The spring water is a simple onsen, and you can bathe at any time, 24 hours a day. Because the onsen minerals are not very harsh, the lodge says that babies and people with sensitive skin can bathe in it too. Since the open-air bath belongs to your room, you can bathe with your children as a family on your own. There is no published information on bathing for children who are not yet out of diapers (not yet toilet-trained). The baths are stocked with 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner and body soap. If you would like a communal bath or a family bath, the Waita Onsen area is within a 5 to 10 minute drive. A bathing tax of 150 yen per person applies separately to junior high school students and older.
