forumWhat families say
Rakuten Travel rating 3.96 out of 5 (827 reviews). Guests praise the Omoiyari Cart (a courtesy cart) at the buffet, which helps even when children wander around, the onsen you can soak in while watching the sunset, and family-friendly facilities such as board games and table tennis. The seafood buffet also rates fairly well. On the other hand, some guests say the walk to the baths is hard from certain rooms, one found the single table-tennis table fully booked, and at one point the open-air bath in the men's bath was under construction.

Overview
Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Amakusa Hotel Kameya is an onsen hotel whose communal bath sits at the highest spot in Kamiamakusa. Its highlights are an open-air bath looking out on Amakusa Fuji and a buffet with a live kitchen. The Japanese-style tatami rooms range from 6 to 16 tatami mats, and the 16-mat rooms sleep up to 7 guests. The restaurant provides free baby food along with children's tableware and chairs, and the communal bath changing room has a baby bed and a baby bath. On the other hand, there are no meals adapted for food allergies and no private-hire bath, and in the communal bath there are 24 steps between the changing room and the bathing area.
Rooms
The hotel has 76 rooms in total, and you can choose from Japanese-style tatami rooms, Japanese-Western rooms and Western-style twin rooms. The Standard Japanese-style Rooms come in three sizes: 12 tatami mats with an in-room bath (1 to 5 guests), 14 tatami mats with a shower only (1 to 6 guests) and 16 tatami mats with a shower only (1 to 7 guests). The Superior Japanese-style Rooms of 12 tatami mats, either with an in-room bath (sea side) or with a shower only, take 1 to 5 guests, and the 8-mat Superior room with an in-room bath (sea side) takes 1 to 3 guests. The Economy Japanese-style Room of 6 tatami mats, with no in-room bath, takes 1 to 2 guests and is booked after agreeing to the notices in the property information section.
The Superior Japanese-Western Twin of 6 tatami mats with an in-room bath (sea side) is 61 sq m and takes 1 to 4 guests; when 3 or more stay, the third guest onward sleeps on futon bedding. The Superior Japanese Bed room with a shower only is a 52 sq m Japanese-Western room with tatami-surfaced beds (3 semi-double beds). When 4 guests stay, the fourth bed is a sofa bed, and the bed height is not listed in our information. In the Standard Twin with a shower only (36 sq m, 1 to 3 guests) and the Superior Twin with an in-room bath (40 sq m, 1 to 3 guests), the third bed for a third guest is a sofa bed.
Rooms listed as "shower only" have no bathtub, so if you want to bathe your child in a tub in your room, choose a room "with an in-room bath". The water in the guest-room baths is not onsen water. Room equipment includes a humidifier. Children aged 3 and over who have not yet started elementary school are charged, and are booked in the category with meals and futon bedding. Adding a futon for a child under 3 costs an additional 2,200 yen and requires advance notice. Because of room size, futons cannot be added beyond a room's capacity.
Dining
Breakfast and dinner are both buffets in the restaurant; in-room dining is not available. Dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The restaurant provides baby food free of charge; just ask the staff if you would like some. Children's tableware and chairs are available too. There are no meals adapted for food allergies. You may bring in your own food, but you need to let the hotel know when booking. Snow crab and grilled king crab dishes, whether ordered separately or included in a crab plan, are served only to elementary school children and older. The restaurant is in the West Building, some distance from the rooms in the East Building and the Main Building.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen water is heated and recirculated through filtration, and the indoor bath of the communal bath and part of the small bath on the 2nd floor of the Main Building are not onsen. The communal bath is on the top floor of the West Building, and its open-air bath looks out on Amakusa Fuji. The communal bath and open-air bath are open from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the sauna from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.; hours may change during cleaning. In the panoramic communal bath there are 24 steps between the changing room and the bathing area, so guests need a companion's assistance when using it. The stairs have handrails, but the bathing area does not. The small bath on the 2nd floor of the Main Building has an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and since it involves no stairs like the communal bath does, it also suits families with young children. The small bath alternates between men and women: women from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and men from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. There is no private-hire bath. According to the hotel's onsen page, guests with tattoos may use the communal bath only if the tattoos can be completely covered with the hotel's designated cover seals (for a fee). Rakuten Travel's notes, however, still state that such guests are refused, so confirming with the hotel before booking is the surest approach.
Family-Friendly Features
The communal bath changing room has a baby bed (free of charge). The communal bath also has a baby bath, a baby chair and a diaper bin, and diaper bags are among the changing-room amenities (the diaper bins are not placed in guest rooms). Babies and young children who are not yet out of diapers (not yet toilet-trained) are asked not to use the tubs and use the baby bath provided instead. Children aged 7 and over or 120 cm and taller use the bath for their own gender. Children's yukata (free of charge) and slippers are available as well. Inside the hotel there is a corner with board games from around the world, a manga corner (free of charge), table tennis and a karaoke room (for a fee).
