Nikko Hoshi no Yado is an onsen ryokan on a hilltop, a 15-minute walk from Nikko Toshogu Shrine and a 2-minute walk from the Shinkyo Bridge. It takes particular pride in its communal bath and open-air bath overlooking a Japanese garden, and in its KAISEKI cuisine made with hikiage yuba (freshly lifted tofu skin), a Nikko specialty. Children who have not yet started elementary school can stay with co-sleeping, and baby beds, baby baths, diaper buckets and other items are available to borrow, so the ryokan is easy to stay at with small children.
Rooms
Alongside the standard 12-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms for 1 to 4 guests, there are several special rooms. Kasho is 29 tatami with a stone-lined bath, and Kocho is 15 tatami with a hinoki-cypress bath. Zuisho is a 21-tatami special room with beds, featuring two semi-double beds and a LIXIL bathroom, and Horai is a barrier-free room that also has two semi-double beds. In Horai, a wheelchair can be used all the way from the elevator through the room, bedroom, bathroom and toilet. Up to 4 sets of futon bedding can be laid out in the standard rooms and up to 6 sets in the special rooms, so the rooms work well for families.
Dining
Dinner is a KAISEKI course built around hikiage yuba (freshly lifted tofu skin), a Nikko specialty. You can choose from four courses: Wakana, the most popular here; Matsukaze, generous in volume; Yugiri, which gathers the best of the popular dishes; and Hanaen, served in a private room and limited to 4 groups a day. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal as standard, and can be changed to a Western breakfast if you let the ryokan know at least 3 days in advance. The dining room Yoimurasaki has 36 chair-and-table seats plus 2 semi-private rooms and 3 fully private rooms, and a sample dinner menu for children is available. Food allergies can be accommodated with notice at least 5 days in advance, but disliked ingredients cannot be accommodated. Baby food is not provided, though the ryokan can warm food you bring and provide tableware.
Baths and Onsen
The onsen, an alkaline simple spring with a pH of 9.5 that began flowing in 1987, feeds the communal bath, the open-air bath and the private-hire bath, on a recirculating system. The communal bath and open-air bath are open from noon to midnight and from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., and are closed from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for cleaning. The private-hire bath Amanogawa is booked in 45-minute slots for one group at a time, at 1,000 yen including tax for staying guests. Because a revision to Tochigi Prefecture's ordinance restricts mixed bathing with children aged 7 and over, families who want to bathe together are directed to the private-hire bath or to a room with its own bath, such as one with a hinoki-cypress bath. There is a baby bed in the women's communal bath changing room, and there are baby baths inside both the men's and women's communal baths. The communal bath is in a separate building reached by stairs, so it cannot be used with a wheelchair.

Items available to borrow include a diaper bucket, baby body soap, baby wipes, a child's chair and a toilet-training seat, and humidifiers and air purifiers can be borrowed as well; all are limited in number. Access
A shuttle bus runs by reservation from Tobu-Nikko Station and JR Nikko Station. The ryokan sits on a hill, a 2-minute walk from the Shinkyo Bridge and a 15-minute walk from Nikko Toshogu Shrine. By car it is 5 minutes from Nikko IC on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Doro, and free parking is available for 16 cars. Standard checkout is at 10 a.m., and late checkout is until 11 a.m.
