Central Kagoshima City can be explored by streetcar and bus, but a rental car is the standard way to reach Ibusuki or Kirishima. From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, it's about 50 minutes to Ibusuki by limited express train; the sightseeing train "Ibusuki no Tamatebako" is popular with kids too, so book ahead. The ferry to Sakurajima takes about 15 minutes, and you can bring your car aboard.
