About Amakusa Five Bridges
The Amakusa Five Bridges form a connecting road that links Misumi, at the tip of the Uto Peninsula in Kumamoto Prefecture, to Kamishima (Kami-Amakusa Island) by way of Oyano Island, Nagaura Island, Ike Island, and Maeshima Island, using five bridges that each have a different structure. The total length is 17.4 km, and the road opened in 1966. The stretch from Oyano Island to Kamishima is less than 3 km of small islands strung together, with Bridges No. 2 through No. 5 following almost one after another. The view of large and small islands floating in the sea on both sides is called Amakusa Matsushima, and it is counted as one of Japan's Three Great Matsushima (the country's three famous pine-clad island scenic spots). The section from Bridge No. 1 to Bridge No. 5 is named the Amakusa Pearl Line and has also been chosen as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads.

Travel tips
You can enjoy the Amakusa Matsushima scenery from the Matsushima Observatory, which looks out over Maeshima Bridge and the islands, and also from the viewpoints on Mount Takabuto and Mount Sengan. The sunset seen from the Mount Takabuto observatory is certified as one of Japan's 100 Best Sunsets. The sights on the islands are spread far apart and getting around is mainly by car, so it works well to limit how many places you visit in a day: sightsee in the morning and check in to your hotel early in the afternoon.
Best season
Spring through early summer and autumn bring mild weather, which makes them comfortable seasons for driving across the bridges and enjoying the views from the observatories. Summer suits a trip built around playing in the sea and dolphin watching, and winter suits a relaxing trip to warm up in a hot spring. Weather varies from year to year, so please check the forecast before you leave.
Getting there
From the Gokyo-iriguchi intersection on National Route 57, turn off in Misumi-machi, Uki City, and head for Tenmon Bridge, which is Bridge No. 1. An express bus called "Amakusa-go" also runs over the five bridges and connects Kumamoto and Hondo.
