forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.69 out of 5 (426 reviews). In reviews from families, guests praise the dinner and breakfast made with local ingredients and the view from the open-air bath. Many praise the quality of the water, and the attentive service of the staff is also mentioned. As a caution, some note that the open-air bath has no fence, so they had to be careful when bathing with children. Some reviews also mention stink bugs getting into rooms in autumn.

Overview

Yukiguni no Yado Takahan is regarded as the founding inn of Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen, and it is where Yasunari Kawabata wrote Snow Country. The men's and women's communal baths both have onsen water flowing straight from the source, each with an open-air bath and a sauna. Rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms, ranging from a special room for up to 10 guests to rooms for 2 to 5 guests. This is a ryokan for spending quiet time, and the ryokan advises that it is not suited to families with small children who run around. Breakfast and dinner are both served in the dining area, and children's meals follow the adult menu with fewer dishes. Children who are not yet out of diapers cannot get into the communal bath tubs and use the baby bathtub in the women's changing room instead. A free shuttle runs to GALA Ski Resort and Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort.

Rooms

There are 35 rooms in all: 20 in the East Building, 13 in the South Building, and 2 Ginrei rooms with their own open-air bath. Rooms are mainly Japanese-style tatami rooms, and you can choose the size to suit your group. The special room on the 4th floor of the South Building has Japanese-style tatami rooms of 13, 12 and 8 tatami mats plus a broad window-side space; it sleeps up to 10 guests and is about 80 sq m. The Japanese-style tatami rooms on the 4th floor of the South Building come with an anteroom, sleep up to 4 guests and are about 40 sq m, while those on the 3rd floor of the South Building sleep up to 5. Every South Building room has a bathroom and a toilet with a washing function.

The rooms on the 5th and 6th floors of the East Building are about 32 sq m with a shower room. The 6th-floor rooms have beds and sleep up to 2 guests, and the 5th-floor rooms sleep up to 3. The kotatsu (heated low table) room floors on the 3rd and 4th floors of the East Building have 32 sq m rooms for up to 3 guests, intended for guests who want quiet rest. These rooms have no bath, so children bathe in the communal bath as well.

The Ginrei rooms have their own view onsen: a private bath with a view, drawing onsen water from the Yumoto source into the room. Room 317 sleeps up to 3 guests and is about 80 sq m, and Room 318 sleeps up to 2 guests and is about 70 sq m. Each combines a Western-style room with twin semi-double beds and a Japanese-style tatami room with a sofa living area. The hotel's published figures for capacity and for whether a bath is included vary, so please confirm when booking. Humidifiers are available to borrow. Whether co-sleeping is allowed, and whether cribs or baby futons are available for guest rooms, is not stated, so please confirm when booking.

Dining

Breakfast and dinner are both served in the dining area; in-room dining is not available. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal, though it is served as a buffet on busy days and similar occasions. Children's meals follow the adult menu: preschool-age children (ages 3 to 5) get about 50% as many dishes as adults, and elementary school children (ages 6 to 12) about 70%. A typical kids' meal is not served. Meals for children under 3 are not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan. Some plans state that "meals for elementary school children are the same as for adults."

For allergies, call at least 3 days in advance and the kitchen will accommodate as far as possible, for an additional 3,300 yen. Single allergens can be handled, but wheat, soy and similar ingredients may be contained in seasonings, so not every request can be met. Trace amounts left on cooking utensils cannot be removed, and for severe allergies guests are asked to consult their own doctor. On plans that include dinner, dinner may not be prepared if you have not checked in by 7 p.m. and have not contacted the ryokan.

Baths and Onsen

The water is a simple sulfur spring. The men's and women's communal baths both have water flowing straight from the source, each with an open-air bath and a sauna. In winter, the open-air bath water is recirculated within the tub and heated. Bathing is available from 2 p.m. until 9:30 a.m. the next morning. The water in the tubs is about 41°C to 39°C, lukewarm outside of summer.

Children of elementary school age and older bathe separately by gender, in the men's or women's bath. Children who are not yet out of diapers cannot get into the communal bath tubs, so they use the baby bathtub in the women's changing room. Parents of small children are asked to watch out for the wire fence at the men's open-air bath. The hotel's onsen page says that a baby bed and water are provided, and the accompanying photo shows the baby bed in front of the shelves in a tatami-floored changing room. Whether it is in the women's or the men's bath is not stated, so please confirm when booking. Only the 2 Ginrei rooms have their own onsen.

Family-Friendly Features

A plan description reads: "Many of our guests wish to enjoy the hot springs quietly, and we hope to remain that kind of ryokan. For that reason, we are not suited to families with small children who run around, or to group trips that want to drink and make noise." No age-based restrictions on stays are stated. The plans show that child rates are set, but the age categories and prices are not stated, so please confirm when booking. The bathing tax is 150 yen per adult.

The building has 6 floors, with an escalator and an elevator. The ryokan does say frankly that it is not barrier-free, with steps and stairs, and wheelchairs are available. Inside there is an after-bath lounge, a shop, a coin laundry (1,200 yen per load, including detergent, washing and drying) and a table tennis corner, which the ryokan suggests for families. The website also has information in English.

Access

5 minutes by car from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, or about 6 minutes by car from Yuzawa IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway. If you arrive by train, call when you reach the station and the ryokan will come to pick you up. The station shuttle runs every 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and pickup times cannot be reserved in advance. Parking is free, with space for 20 cars according to the ryokan's facility overview. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Some room-only plans accept late arrivals, so if you will be late, check the plan details. Checkout is at 10 a.m. GALA Ski Resort and Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort are about 5 minutes away by car on snowy roads. A free shuttle runs to both from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and you can use the changing room in the building even before check-in.
