forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.63 out of 5 (2,570 reviews). Some guests say their children were delighted to arrive by the dedicated cruiser, and others mention the children getting very excited about the fluffy beds. Guests also praise the roast beef at the breakfast buffet, and some point to stay perks such as the passport for the following day. On the other hand, a guest traveling with elementary school children noted a musty smell from the carpets, as the building is old.

Overview

Hotel Europe Huis Ten Bosch is a hotel run directly by Huis Ten Bosch in its Harbor Zone, and if you are only staying at the hotel, you normally do not need an admission passport. There is also a check-in cruise, in which a dedicated cruiser carries you from the Welcome Area to the hotel's own pier (an admission passport valid for that day is required). Co-sleeping is free through the sixth grade of elementary school, with 1 child per adult and up to 2 per room. Cribs (ages 0 to under 2) and bed guards (ages 1.5 to 5) are available to borrow free of charge; request them when booking, as numbers are limited. The breakfast venue has baby food for babies from about 5 months. There is no communal bath in the hotel, but guests can use Huis Ten Bosch Onsen, outside the park, for just the bathing tax.

Rooms

The hotel has 310 guest rooms in total. The Standard Double is 38 sq m for 1 to 2 guests, with one bed 180 cm wide. The Deluxe Twin is 39 sq m for 1 to 3 guests and is furnished with semi-double-size beds. The Standard Triple is 39 sq m for 3 guests, with an extra bed measuring 110 cm wide by 195 cm long added. The Standard Fours (a quad room) is 72 sq m for 4 guests, made by joining two twin-type rooms from the inside, with one bathroom and one toilet. The Executive Twin is 54 sq m and looks out on the Domtoren. It can also be set up for 3 to 4 guests, in which case the third and any further beds are sofa beds. The Connecting Room is 74 sq m, made up of two rooms linked by an inner door; it sleeps 2 to 5 guests and has two bathrooms and two toilets. The Royal Suite Fours is 109 sq m for 1 to 4 guests, and the Maisonette Suite Fours is 165 sq m for 2 to 4 guests. The Premier Suite Twin, limited to 3 rooms (99 sq m, for up to 2 adults), has a mini kitchen and a dining table. Maisonette-type rooms have a spiral staircase, so keep an eye on small children around the stairs. Every room has a humidifying air purifier.

Dining

On plans that include breakfast, you can choose the morning course at the French restaurant De Admiraal, the Japanese breakfast set at Kissuitei, or the buffet at Anchors Lounge, which centers on Western dishes. Meals for co-sleeping children aged 4 and over are paid directly at the hotel. Breakfast is 5,000 yen for adults and 2,500 yen for children (age 4 through elementary school), and it is free for co-sleeping children aged 0 to under 4. Room-service breakfast has no children's rate and is ordered at the adult rate. The Anchors Lounge breakfast buffet offers several kinds of baby food for babies from about 5 months, from peach and white grape at around 5 months to an oyakodon-style dish (chicken and egg over rice) at around 12 months. Just ask the host crew; the selection may change depending on supplies. At the other restaurants, which do not prepare baby food, you can bring your own, and hot water and microwave warming are available. The Japanese restaurant Kissuitei has a children's breakfast set (2,500 yen) for ages 4 through elementary school, plus a children's bento for lunch and dinner (3,000 yen): a four-tier box with chirashi sushi (sushi rice topped with assorted ingredients), fried shrimp, Hamburg steak and more. The French restaurant De Admiraal also offers a children's lunch dish (3,000 yen) and children's dinner courses (5,500 yen and 7,000 yen). On plans that include dinner, details of any food allergies must be sent in advance, and requests made on the day may not be accommodated. The extent of allergy support is not listed in our information, so please confirm when booking. De Admiraal dinner plans on booking sites (such as plans with a seasonal course dinner) do not accept bookings that include children of elementary school age or younger. During dinner hours, De Admiraal asks guests to dress smart casual, and guests in slippers, beach sandals or shorts are asked not to enter, so plan your children's clothing accordingly.

Baths

The hotel has no communal bath and no private-hire bath. At Huis Ten Bosch Onsen, a bathing facility outside Huis Ten Bosch, you can use the communal bath and sauna for just the bathing tax of 150 yen per person with the discount voucher handed out at the front desk (one per person per night; if you stay several nights and want to go again, pick up another at the front desk). Children under 12 are free. A shuttle bus runs to the onsen, which is open from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (from 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month). Co-sleeping children are also free, but a towel set costs an extra 200 yen. Children who are not yet out of diapers are asked to refrain from using the communal bath, and the family bath, offered at a discounted rate (reservation required, separate fee), is recommended instead.

Family-Friendly Features

Each adult can co-sleep with one child up to the sixth grade of elementary school free of charge, with a maximum of 2 co-sleeping children per room. The stay itself is free for co-sleeping children, but admission, food and drink, and facility use are charged separately. On Rakuten Travel, transport-and-accommodation packages are not eligible for free co-sleeping, and on its domestic tours (Rakupack), children aged 6 and over cannot co-sleep. In the children's rates for booking-site plans, both upper and lower elementary grades pay 100% of the adult rate, babies and young children with bedding also pay 100% of the adult rate, and babies and young children without meals or bedding are free. Which categories are accepted differs by plan. Children aged 4 through elementary school who will co-sleep should be booked under "Infant/young child: no meals or bedding." When you book a room-only stay through Huis Ten Bosch's own hotel reservations, choose either "Child (elementary school age or younger, with bedding, rate according to the plan)" or "Co-sleeping (elementary school age or younger, no meals or bedding)." On flight-inclusive plans through the same hotel reservations, children aged 3 and over pay the same room rate as adults.

Cribs are available to borrow free of charge for ages 0 to under 2, one per room, and must be requested when booking. Because of the room layout, cribs cannot be placed in the Executive Maisonette Twin and Double (listed under their former name, Europe Designer Room Maisonette Twin/Double, in Huis Ten Bosch's FAQ). Bed guards are available to borrow free of charge for ages 1.5 to 5, also requested when booking. Both are limited in number, and all of them may already be on loan. A diaper bin is free to borrow as well, requested when booking. Children's pajamas or a gown (120 cm) are available to borrow free of charge, and slippers and toothbrushes are free; ask for these at the front desk. No information is published on borrowing a formula-preparation kettle or bottle-sterilizing supplies, or on baby futon rentals, and there is no childcare service. If you buy a 1DAY Passport or an After 3 Passport on your check-in day, the front desk gives you a passport for the following day, and co-sleeping children aged 4 and over are eligible too. From the day after check-in, you can also use early entry one hour before opening (Harbor Gate only) and Early Park-In from 9 a.m.

Access

A check-in cruise takes you by dedicated cruiser from the Welcome Area to the hotel's own pier; boarding requires a Huis Ten Bosch admission passport valid for that day. It runs 6 times a day, every 30 minutes from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis. A free shuttle bus also runs from in front of the in-park hotel luggage storage to the hotel, a ride of about 10 minutes, every 20 to 30 minutes with the last departures in the 7 p.m. hour. An admission passport is normally not needed for the bus, but it is required on the days of the Kyushu-ichi Dai Hanabi Matsuri fireworks festival and the Countdown. After the shuttle bus has finished for the day, call the hotel from the phone at the luggage storage and a dedicated car will come to pick you up. The hotel is in the Harbor Zone, which is normally free to enter, so you do not need a passport just to stay. You do need one to enter the Theme Park Zone, and on days when every area is ticketed, such as the Kyushu-ichi Dai Hanabi Matsuri and the Countdown. From the Marine Terminal, where high-speed boats from Nagasaki Airport arrive, turn right out of the exit and walk about 5 minutes. Check-in is from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and checkout is at 11 a.m.
