forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 4.67 out of 5 (2,014 reviews). Guests mention a summer festival event that children can enjoy, with one family reporting how much their child loved it, and another saying that on their first trip with a child the baby items were so well stocked that they did not need to bring anything. Families also note thoughtful touches such as staff adjusting the temperature of the tea to suit a child. On the other hand, some guests found the futon mattresses firm and hard to sleep on.

Overview

Dogokan is a Japanese-style ryokan designed by Kisho Kurokawa, standing on high ground in the Dogo Onsen district of Matsuyama, Ehime. It has 90 rooms, and the communal bath, fed by water piped in 100% from Dogo Onsen, has an open-air bath, a waterfall bath (utaseyu), a sauna and more. Children are welcome to stay: a range of items such as cribs and strollers is available to borrow (in limited numbers), and kids' set meals are prepared. The Western-style rooms and the rooms on the top 8th floor come with restrictions on co-sleeping and on use by children under 12.

Rooms

The standard Japanese-style tatami rooms range from 10 to 12.5 tatami mats, and their Kisho Kurokawa design brings together Japanese tradition and contemporary style. Western-style twin rooms come in two types: 17 sq m (for 1-2 guests, with two beds 110 cm wide, 200 cm long and 45 cm high) and 22 sq m (for 1-2 guests, with two beds of the same specification). Neither type can accommodate children who co-sleep. On the 7th floor, the Shofuro wing has 9 rooms with a garden open-air bath fed by piped Dogo Onsen water, so guests can enjoy the onsen in their own room. On the 8th and top floor, the Shofuro rooms — Japanese-Western rooms 801 and 808, and Japanese-modern twin rooms 802 through 807 — do not accept children under 12.

Dining

Dinner and breakfast include kaiseki course meals, served as in-room dining or at the on-site restaurant Shiki Hanasuki. For children, a kids' set meal is prepared as the dinner menu on the private-room dining plan, with sashimi of Ai-dai sea bream and saimaki prawn, beef stew, Hamburg steak and more (5,500 yen or 2,200 yen per serving). For younger children, simpler dishes such as chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), udon, simmered fish, grilled fish, karaage (fried chicken) and tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) can also be discussed. If anyone has allergies or ingredients they would rather avoid, please let the ryokan know at least 3 days before the date of your stay.

Baths and Onsen

The communal bath is fed by water piped in 100% from Dogo Onsen and offers a variety of bathing areas, including a hot bath, a warm bath, a waterfall bath (utaseyu), an open-air bath, a reclining bath and a sauna. Hours are 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to midnight. There is no private-hire bath. A stair lift is installed on the staircase leading to the communal bath.
