Overview
Dogo Onsen Yamatoya Honten is a long-established sukiya-style ryokan founded in the first year of the Meiji era, standing right beside Dogo Onsen Honkan. It has 90 rooms, with a communal bath and an open-air bath for men and for women, all fed by the same piped-in hot spring water as Dogo Onsen Honkan. Children ages 0 to 5 can stay by co-sleeping, and children's meals such as the kids' set meal and the kids' plate are available. There is no private-hire bath, and meals are served in the restaurant or in a private dining room.
Rooms
This long-established ryokan, founded in the first year of the Meiji era, stands right next to Dogo Onsen Honkan and has 90 rooms in total. Guest rooms are split between Japanese-style tatami rooms in the sukiya style and Western-style rooms that feel more like a hotel. The Standard Japanese-style tatami room (10 tatami mats plus a 2-tatami entry area, 45 sq m) sleeps 1 to 5 guests, sits on floors 5 through 10, and comes with an air purifier with a humidifying function. The Semi-Suite Japanese-style tatami room (10 tatami mats plus a 6-tatami anteroom, 62 sq m) sleeps 1 to 7 guests and is a special Japanese-style room recommended for two generations traveling together. The Suite Japanese-style tatami room (13 tatami mats plus a 7-tatami anteroom, 78 sq m) sleeps 1 to 9 guests, and some of these rooms have a hinoki-wood in-room bath in the anteroom. Among the Western-style rooms, you can choose the Relax Single (15 sq m), with a semi-double bed and a massage chair, or the Deluxe Twin (over 40 sq m, with two double beds), limited to just two rooms, 501 and 502. Wi-Fi and an air purifier with a humidifying function are available in every room.
Dining
Meals are not served in guest rooms; they are served in the restaurant or in a private dining room. Some of the private dining rooms have sunken-floor (horigotatsu) seating, so you can stretch out your legs while you eat. For children, there is the Kids' Set Meal (4,400 yen), a Japanese-style tray of sashimi, tempura and chawanmushi savory egg custard accompanied by Hamburg steak and fried chicken, and the Kids' Plate (2,750 yen), which brings together Hamburg steak, fried shrimp and other favorites on one plate for children from the final year of kindergarten through the lower grades of elementary school. Breakfast is the Setouchi Iitokodori buffet, a name meaning the best bits of Setouchi. Meals accommodating allergies can also be arranged.
Baths and Onsen
The communal baths and open-air baths are separate for men and women, and use the same piped-in alkaline simple onsen water as Dogo Onsen Honkan. The women's bath, Ominaeshi, has an open-air bath built of rock with a pot-shaped tub carved from a single stone, and a hinoki-wood indoor bath. The men's bath, Otokoeshi, has an indoor bath finished with Iyo Oshima stone and a hinoki-wood open-air bath. Bathing hours are 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to midnight. Towels and bath towels are provided in the bathing areas. There is no private-hire bath, so families who want a tub to themselves need to choose a Suite Japanese-style tatami room with a hinoki-wood in-room bath.
Family-Friendly Features
Children ages 0 to 5 can stay by co-sleeping, and co-sleeping children ages 3 and over are charged a facility fee of 2,200 yen. Children's chairs can be set up in the dining areas on request, and a portable crib is also available to borrow, in limited numbers. Access
Dogo Onsen Honkan is a 1-minute walk from the entrance. The ryokan is about 20 minutes by car from JR Matsuyama Station, about 20 minutes by car from Matsuyama IC, about 30 minutes by taxi from Matsuyama Airport, and about a 5-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Station on the Iyo Railway city tram line. Parking has space for 50 cars at 1,000 yen per night, and no reservation is needed. Check-in is from 3 p.m., and checkout is by 10 a.m.
