About Kakunodate Samurai District
The Kakunodate Samurai District is a historic streetscape lined with samurai residences in Kakunodate, Semboku, Akita Prefecture. Old homes of mid- and lower-ranking samurai still stand here, and the area is known for its black board fences and groves of weeping cherry trees. It is often called the "Little Kyoto of Michinoku" (the old name for Japan's northeastern region). A 0.8-kilometer stretch has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads, and the surrounding 6.9 hectares is designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Along the street you will find samurai houses including the Ishiguro, Aoyagi, Matsumoto, Iwahashi, Kawarada, and Odano residences. Nearby are the Omura Art Museum, the Hirafuku Memorial Art Museum, the Kakunodate Kabazaiku Denshokan (a museum of local cherry bark craft), and the Shinchosha Memorial Literature Museum.

Travel tips
If you visit during cherry blossom season, allow extra walking time to account for the crowds. Because it is about a 15-minute walk from the station to the street, plan in rest breaks for tired children. If you also plan to visit Lake Tazawa and the Nyuto Onsen area, note that they are spread out east to west, so leave plenty of travel time.
Best season
The weeping cherry trees in spring are especially splendid, and together with the Somei Yoshino cherry trees along the Hinokinai River embankment, they are listed among Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots. The Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate area offers highlights in every season: fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy scenery in winter. The street is outdoors, so dress for the weather and temperature.
