forumWhat families say

Rakuten Travel rating 3.92 out of 5 (1,843 reviews). Guests report that carp swim in the open-air bath, much to their children's delight, and that a child who usually wants to get out right away was able to soak at a relaxed pace. They also rate the buffet highly for its wide variety and good flavor, with one saying they would like to try dinner there next time. On the other hand, one family found it hard to get their child changed because there was no bed for children.

Overview

Shizukuishi Prince Hotel is a resort hotel in the Takakura Onsen area of Shizukuishi, Iwate. The roofed open-air bath, Shizukuishi Takakura Onsen, flows directly from the source, and you can take in the scenery of each season and watch carp swimming in the pond just beside it. Children ages 0 to 6 can stay with co-sleeping, and cribs and humidifiers are available to borrow, both in limited numbers. Shizukuishi Ski Resort and a golf course lie right in front of the hotel, and a free shuttle bus from Morioka Station and Shizukuishi Station can be reserved in advance.

Rooms

Guest rooms are divided between the Superior floors on the 8th and 9th floors, decorated with carpets inspired by wild mountain plants and traditional crafts such as Nambu ironware and indigo dyeing, and the Standard floors on the 3rd through 7th floors. Every room on the 8th floor can be used as a triple (for 3 guests), which suits groups and families. The Superior Hollywood Twin on the 9th floor, with two beds pushed together, is recommended for couples and for families with a small child co-sleeping. The 22 sq m Standard Twin can take up to 3 guests by using an extra bed (a sofa bed). Connecting rooms, made by joining two adjoining rooms, can be booked for 4 or more guests and work well for larger families.

Dining

Breakfast is a Japanese-Western buffet built around the bounty of Iwate, including the brand rice Ginga no Shizuku, Iwaizumi yogurt and Koiwai milk. Dinner is normally a Japanese-Western buffet in the Prince Room, with all-you-can-eat roast beef and Iwate classics such as Morioka's three famous noodle dishes. Dinner buffet prices are set by age: 3,300 yen for children of elementary school age, and 1,900 yen for children aged 4 and up who have not yet started elementary school. Children's tableware is available in the buffet venue. At Restaurant Kobushi, which serves course meals, children up to elementary school age are served a children's course dinner, while children under school age, including those co-sleeping, are served a kids' plate. Food allergy accommodation is limited to the 8 specified allergenic ingredients - shrimp, crab, walnut, wheat, buckwheat, egg, milk and peanut - and must be requested in advance.

Baths and Onsen

The onsen here is the roofed open-air bath Shizukuishi Takakura Onsen, with two separate bathing areas for men and for women. The spring water is a sulfur-containing sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring, and staying guests bathe free of charge, though adults pay a separate bathing tax of 150 yen. There are 17 washing stations, with partitions provided. There is no indoor communal bath and no private-hire bath. Each season brings its own view - fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, autumn foliage and snow scenes in winter - and carp swim in the pond right beside the bath.

Family-friendly features

Children ages 0 to 6 can stay with co-sleeping, with no facility usage fee. Amenities are not set out for co-sleeping children, however, and extra ones are available for a fee. If a co-sleeping child aged 4 to 6 has meals, a separate meal charge applies. There is no limit on the number of co-sleeping children staying without meals or futon bedding. Cribs are available, but the number is limited and a reservation is required. Humidifiers are also available to borrow, handled in the order requests are received and limited in number. Wheelchairs are available to borrow, and guest rooms have Western-style toilets. Childcare services are not offered.

Access

By train, the hotel is about 20 minutes by taxi from Shizukuishi Station on the Akita Shinkansen, and about 50 minutes by taxi from Morioka Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. By car, it is about 20 km from Morioka I.C. on the Tohoku Expressway via Route 46, roughly 30 minutes under normal conditions. Parking is free for staying guests.
