Near the border of Akita and Iwate prefectures, at the foot of Mount Nyuto, Nyuto Onsenkyo is a hidden hot-spring area where seven onsen inns, each with its own spring source, are gathered together. Kyukamura Nyuto-Onsenkyo is the public inn with the most modern facilities among them; the building was renovated in recent years and has few steps, so families with children can stay at ease. Surrounded by beech forest, it lets you take in scenery that changes with the seasons from the open-air bath.

The onsen is set up so you can enjoy two spring sources, both flowing straight from the spring: the indoor bath uses Nyuto no Yu (a sodium bicarbonate spring, with a large tub for 15 and a small tub for 5), and the open-air bath uses Tazawako Kogen no Yu (a simple sulfur spring, for 8). The changing room of each bathing area has one baby bed. There is no private-hire bath, so if you would like to enjoy the onsen just with your family, using the communal bath from 5 a.m. is recommended. There are 38 rooms in all - 8- and 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami rooms, Western-style rooms, Western-style rooms with a bath, and Japanese-style tatami twin rooms - and the Western-style rooms with a bath, which can take 3 guests with an extra bed, suit family stays well.

Meals center on a buffet that draws on Akita's regional home cooking, and the local hot pots that change daily - kiritanpo-nabe (a hot pot with grilled pounded-rice skewers) and yamanoimo-nabe (a mountain-yam hot pot) - are popular. For children there is a separate buffet course with fried chicken, yakisoba and desserts, along with children's cutlery, chairs, yukata and toothbrushes. The inn also sells the Yumeguri-cho bathing pass (2,500 yen for staying guests only, 1,000 yen for children), which lets you bathe at all seven inns of the Nyuto Onsen association, and the Yumeguri-go shuttle can take you between the inns.
