Overview
Kamenoi Hotel Tazawako is an onsen hotel on the Tazawako Kogen highlands at the foot of Akita-Komagatake, surrounded by beech forest. The room types range widely, from purely Japanese-style tatami rooms to Japanese-Western rooms and Western-style twins, and families can choose the Main Building's 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (sleeping up to 5) or the East Building's Japanese-Western room (49 sq m, sleeping up to 6). Dinner and breakfast are both buffets, with baby food available at the venue and staff on hand to warm it. Baby soap and a diaper pail are available to borrow at the front desk, and the amenity corner is always stocked with disposable diapers and children's slippers. Cribs are not available to borrow.
Rooms
The hotel has 121 rooms, all of them non-smoking. There are Japanese-style tatami rooms and Japanese-Western rooms roomy enough for a family: the Main Building's 10-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (32 sq m) sleeps up to 5, the West Building's 12.5-tatami Japanese-style tatami room (36 sq m) sleeps up to 6, and the East Building's Japanese-Western room (49 sq m) has 2 beds, with futon bedding laid out for parties of 3 or more, and sleeps up to 6. There is also a special room in the Main Building (12 tatami mats plus 8 and 3 tatami mats, 66.3 sq m). For Western-style rooms there are the Main Building Twin (32 sq m, with semi-double beds), the East Building Twin (21 sq m, sleeping up to 3), the East Building Japanese Twin (25 sq m, a Japanese-style tatami room fitted with beds), the East Building Japanese Single (16 sq m, with a toilet but no bath) and the Japanese Single in Yasuragikan (17 sq m). Every room has a kettle, which can be used for preparing formula. A microwave is in the East Building lobby, and Yasuragikan has one in its shared space as well. The West Building's rooms have no elevator, so you use the stairs, and the East Building's rooms are set apart from the front desk and the communal bath and also involve stairs, taking about 5 to 7 minutes. Families using a stroller should check the routes in advance.

Dinner and breakfast are both buffets at the mountain resort restaurant, where about 60 items are laid out, from Akita dishes such as kiritanpo hot pot (with grilled mashed-rice skewers), Inaniwa udon and iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon) to freshly made dishes from the live kitchen. Baby food is available at the buffet venue at both dinner and breakfast, and the venue staff will warm it if needed. You may also bring a stroller into the dining venue; simply mention it at the front desk when you check in. The only children's seating is chairs for young children, and baby chairs are not available. At both dinner and breakfast, the menu cards label the 9 major allergens (wheat, egg, milk, shrimp, crab, buckwheat, peanut, walnut and cashew nut), and there is a dedicated staff member to discuss food concerns. Please note, however, that allergenic ingredients are handled in the same kitchen. Both meals are served at the venue, and in-room dining is not offered.
Baths and Onsen
The communal bath Sennin no Yu, on the 1st floor of the West Building, is open from 3 p.m. to midnight and from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning, and the open-air bath Yuju no Yu, on the 1st floor of the Main Building, is open from 4 p.m. to midnight and from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning. Every Friday the open-air bath closes at 9 a.m. instead for equipment maintenance. The open-air bath has no washing area. The water is natural onsen water from Tazawako Kogen, containing three components: sulfur, sulfate and hydrogen carbonate. Mixed bathing is allowed up to age 6. Whether a child who is not yet out of diapers may get into the bath is not stated, so it is reassuring to check with the hotel before booking. In Yasuragikan the open-air bath and the communal bath are some distance from the rooms, and guests who would find the walk difficult are advised to consult the hotel before applying for a reservation.

Access
Tazawako Station, the nearest station, is about 35 minutes from Morioka Station on the Akita Shinkansen, and a free shuttle bus runs from Tazawako Station (departing the station at 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and departing the hotel at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.). The shuttle bus is entirely by reservation, made by 5 p.m. the day before, and bookings close once the seats are full. In winter the 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. departures from the hotel also stop at Tazawako Ski Resort, and the pickup from the ski resort leaves at 4:10 p.m. By car it is about 1 hour from the Morioka IC on the Tohoku Expressway via Route 46. Check-in is at 3 p.m.
