Families with children appreciate the toy loans, the toys placed along the way to the rooms and in the private-hire baths, and the baby soap. One thing to note: some guests say their room was on the second floor and the stairs were steep.

Overview
Ueki Onsen Japanese-style Ryokan Takanoya is a 12-room onsen ryokan at Ueki Onsen in Kita-ku, Kumamoto, with two types of Japanese-style tatami rooms in the main building and the new building. The spring water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring. There are 4 private-hire baths, each with an indoor bath and an open-air bath, which staying guests can use as often as they like free of charge (no reservations; up to 50 minutes per use). Dinner and breakfast are both served in a dining area divided into semi-private sections. Baby items such as baby baths and bouncers are available to borrow free of charge, and the kitchen offers a mini kaiseki course and kids' meals for children, as well as meals that accommodate allergies.
Rooms
There are 12 rooms in two types: Japanese-style tatami rooms of 10 tatami mats plus a 2-mat broad window-side space in the main building, and Japanese-style tatami rooms of 12 tatami mats plus a 2-mat broad window-side space in the new building. According to the ryokan's room information, the main building has 7 rooms and the new building 5. On Rakuten Travel, the 10-mat main-building room is booked for 1 to 5 guests and the 12-mat Japanese-style tatami room for 1 to 6 guests; both are non-smoking rooms with a toilet. A family of 6 would look at the 12-mat room. The ryokan's FAQ states that children who do not have their own futon bedding laid out are not counted toward room capacity. The renovated rooms are traditional Japanese in style, with the classic broad window-side space. Every room has futon bedding, and 2 rooms have two single beds, so if you would like beds, say so when booking. Room equipment includes a TV, a refrigerator, a hair dryer, a safe and a Plasmacluster air purifier with a humidifying function. The rooms have no bath of their own. There are no cribs or baby futons.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are both served in a dining area divided into semi-private sections; in-room dining is not available. According to the plan information on Rakuten Travel, meals are served at tables, laid out so you can eat without worrying about other guests. The ryokan's FAQ states that you can request a partitioned private room or a tatami-seated semi-private room when booking, while requests made on the day may not be possible depending on how busy it is. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., and breakfast starts between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Dishes on plans such as the Shunsai Kaiseki plan are kaiseki cuisine built around a branded Kumamoto Prefecture meat as the main course, with seasonal ingredients, and the content changes with the season. The ryokan began as a sushi restaurant called Yakko Sushi. For children there is a mini kaiseki course and a kids' meal, and children's tableware is provided on request. Baby food is not served. If you mention foods you cannot eat or allergies when booking, substitute dishes are served, with the replacement left to the kitchen's discretion.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring, flowing straight from the source 24 hours a day (with water added in summer). There is one communal bath each for men and women, and each has an open-air bath. The 4 private-hire baths, Kiyo no Yu, Fumi no Yu, Take no Yu and Haru no Yu, all have an indoor bath and an open-air bath. Staying guests can use the private-hire baths as often as they like free of charge, so you can bathe with your small children as a family on your own. There are no reservations: if a bath is free, you collect the key at the front desk, and each use is limited to 50 minutes. You may have to wait when it is busy. Bathing hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. for both the communal baths and the family baths. The water in the tubs is drained once a day, and chlorine disinfection is carried out. According to the ryokan's FAQ, babies can also use the communal baths, with no age restriction, and the communal baths have a bath chair and baby soap. Because this is an onsen, the floors are slippery, and guests are advised to take care. How children in diapers are handled in the private-hire baths is not stated. The communal bath tubs have handrails, and there are a few steps leading to the open-air baths. There are also children's toys for use in the private-hire baths.
Family-Friendly Features
The ryokan's FAQ states that baby baths, baby body soap, toys, bouncers, Bumbo seats and portable bassinets are available to borrow free of charge; baby baths and toys are limited in number. Items not kept in the rooms are also available to borrow free of charge, for example children's toys, picture books, DVD players, portable DVD players, air purifiers, humidifiers, electric hot-water kettles and mobile phone chargers. Picture books are set out on the first and second floors for anyone to use, and there is manga in the lobby. There is no nursing room or diaper-changing table, and the rooms have no diaper bins, so ask for bags or similar if you need them. Hot water for formula may be provided on request, and baby bottles can be washed and sterilized on request, but there is no dedicated equipment such as a formula-preparation kettle or a bottle warmer. Diapers and formula are not sold on site, so please bring your own. For children's rates, children who have not yet started elementary school and have no meals or futon bedding pay an admission fee of 2,640 yen, and children of elementary school age and older with no meals or futon bedding pay an admission fee of 3,850 yen, including a full set of amenities. According to the ryokan's FAQ, a stay for children up to elementary school age is 6,600 yen with two meals of the mini kaiseki course, or 5,610 yen with two kids' meals, and the kids' meal can also be ordered on its own (2,376 yen). Rates may differ by plan, so please confirm when booking. The building and rooms are not barrier-free: there are steps between levels, and it is a two-story building with no elevator. Strollers can be used inside, but because of the steps the ryokan does not particularly recommend it. There are 2 wheelchairs available to borrow, and the guest rooms have Western-style toilets.
