About Yachiyoza Theater
Yachiyoza is a traditional theater in Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture, built in 1910 (Meiji 43) and designated an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government. The two-story wooden building preserves the style of an Edo-period kabuki playhouse, with a hanamichi (raised walkway through the audience), a revolving stage, masuseki (box seats), and sajiki (raised side seating). On the ceiling, advertising paintings for the shops of the local wealthy patrons have been recreated, and you can look up at a large brass chandelier. The museum Yume Kogura displays stage props, costumes worn by Bando Tamasaburo (a renowned kabuki actor), and projectors. The theater sits a short way off the Buzen Kaido road, near Kokonokamachi.
