Overview
Hirayama Onsen Okuyamaga Onsen Ryokan is a 16-room ryokan in Hirayama Onsen, in Hirayama, Yamaga, Kumamoto. Every guest room has its own onsen bath fed straight from the source, which you can use 24 hours a day with no time limit. Children of elementary school age and younger have their own kids' menu with dishes such as Hamburg steak and karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and the dining area provides baby chairs for newborns through children who have not yet started elementary school. Rates for children under school age come in four categories, depending on whether meals and futon bedding are included. There is no elevator: reaching any room other than the detached annex means climbing about 20 steps, and in-room dining is not available.
Rooms
There are five room types: the detached annex, the 30-tatami Japanese-Western room in the main building, the 10-tatami room with a semi-open-air bath, the cottage Western-style room and the cottage Japanese-style room. The entire property is non-smoking. The detached annex has two connected 8-tatami rooms plus a bedroom with two single beds, and sleeps 2 to 6 guests (2 in beds and 4 on futons). It also comes with a shower and a one-person private sauna, though there are steps at the entrance and at the bath. The 30-tatami Japanese-Western room in the main building has two semi-double beds and also sleeps 2 to 6 guests (2 in beds and 4 on futons). According to the ryokan's room guide, the 10-tatami room with a semi-open-air bath sleeps 1 to 4 guests, the cottage Western-style room 1 to 2, and the cottage Japanese-style room (7.5 tatami) 1 to 3. All rooms other than the detached annex are entered from the second floor of the main building, with about 20 steps up to the rooms and no elevator.
Dining
Meals are served either in the tatami seating area on the first floor of the main building or at table seating in the dining area. Table seats are limited, so if you would like one, let the ryokan know when booking. Meals are not served in guest rooms or private rooms, so in-room dining is not available. Dinner is at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., and breakfast at 8 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. Children of elementary school age and younger are served the Hirayamajo kids' meal, a children's menu with Hamburg steak, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), fried shrimp, chawanmushi (savory egg custard), sashimi, white rice, fruit, pudding and more; the contents vary with what is in stock. If an elementary school child would like the same meal as the adults, it is prepared at the adult rate. Baby chairs are provided for newborns through children under school age. For food allergies, let the ryokan know in the remarks field when booking or at least 4 days before your stay, and dishes will be prepared with allergens removed as far as possible. Removal is not guaranteed, and requests made later than 4 days before may not be accommodated.
Baths and Onsen
The spring water is a pH 9.7 alkaline simple sulfur spring that emerges at 60°C and is used flowing straight from the source, with no water added, no heating and no recirculation. The communal bath has an open-air bath and an indoor bath, and in summer the coolest tub is kept at about 34°C. The baths in every guest room are also onsen flowing straight from the source, and you can use them 24 hours a day with no time limit. The ryokan's information lists no private-hire bath (family bath), so if you want to bathe just as a family, the in-room bath is the way to do it. The in-room baths of the 10-tatami room with a semi-open-air bath, the cottage Western-style room and the cottage Japanese-style room do not have a shower. Whether children who are not yet out of diapers may get into the communal bath tubs is not stated, so please confirm with the ryokan. Shower chairs are available to borrow; if you need one, write it in the remarks field when booking.
