About Yamaga Lantern Folk Craft Museum

The Yamaga Lantern Folk Craft Museum is a city-run museum in Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture, that showcases Yamaga lanterns, a Traditional Craft designated by the national government. The building is a Western-style, two-story reinforced concrete structure that opened as a bank in 1925 and is now a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The main hall has about 100 gold lanterns hanging from the ceiling, the symbol of the Yamaga Lantern Festival, along with shrine-style and tatami-room-style lanterns made from nothing but washi (Japanese paper) and paste. In the annex, you can watch young lantern makers at work up close. There are also displays of their tools and posters from past festivals, so you can learn about the history and craft behind the lanterns.

calendar_month

Best season

The exhibits are indoors, so you can visit in any season. During the Yamaga Lantern Festival in August, about 1,000 women dance with gold and silver lanterns on their heads, and the whole town comes alive. Spring and autumn have mild weather that is good for hopping between hot springs, and winter is a lovely time to warm up in an onsen. Crowds and weather vary from year to year, so please treat this as a rough guide.
